Washington AP A Labor Department report shows 80.6 million Americans employed in July with a 5.8 percent unemployment rate. Total employment rose 1.2 million while unemployment fell 160,000, though a 700,000 labor-force rise produced a seasonally adjusted 500,000 job gain and 200,000 more unemployed. The rise mainly affected part timers as full-time unemployment held at 5.3 percent. Average hourly earnings stood at 3.42 dollars with weekly pay at 127.22 dollars, reflecting a shorter work week during a nationwide telephone strike.

Front Royal Woman Charged in Slaying
Mrs. Dorothy Jane Benner Miller, 33, of Front Royal, is charged with murder in the gunshot death of her husband Louis Edward Miller. He, of 586 Kerfoot Ave., died at Warren Memorial Hospital after being shot in the chest. An autopsy was ordered in Richmond. The court appointed counsel for Mrs. Miller, who was released on her own recognizance until a preliminary hearing set for August 23.
