Frederick County adopts consolidation affecting Gainesboro and Back Creek districts. Ten small schools will close this fall, pupils move to eight room consolidated facilities, and bus transportation contracts await bids. Open Sept 17 with an eight month term. Orville Wake named principal to replace G W Ropp.
Mr Winchester proclaims nominations for the meanest thief with emphasis on chicken theft plaguing poultry farmers. He denounces thievery as despicable, noting thieves cloak moves in darkness and seek money with no conscience. He urges readers to name anyone meaner than a chicken thief for the prize.
Invitations sent to Virginia and nearby state apple growers announce the annual orchard picnic on Rosemont orchard farm near Berryville. Senator Harry Byrd will greet guests and introduce speakers from the Apple Association and Virginia Tech among others for talks on cultivation, marketing, and orchard operations.
Byrd W Fugitt a well known Winchester painter fractured his left hip when the ladder slipped while he stood on a porch roof at the Haddox residence on East Cork street. He was taken to Memorial Hospital and casted. Fugitt, a longtime glove worker and horse trainer, is in favorable condition.
The Frederick County School Board invites bids to transport pupils from Hampton School to Gravel Springs and from Gainesboro District schools Ebenezer Whit acre Reynolds Store Dicks Railroad Union Howards Chapel Chestnut Grove Lew and Cross Junction to the new Consolidated School north of Gainesboro. Bids due by 1 PM Saturday August 17. Details at the School Board Office in the County Court House.
Game Warden Francis W. Pingley reports two Virginia officials W Midgette and H A Bailey are due to press an inquiry into widespread dead fish in Opequon Creek near Wadesville. Water samples from Clevenger Ford will be analyzed by the state chemist. results may take weeks.
At a South End Hose Company meeting the vote backed Captain R B Brown of the Sarah Zane to succeed the late C Lee Barr as Fire Chief. A city council committee will seek his appointment tonight. The article also notes a first aid Red Cross class of 12 receiving certificates led by Dr B Harlee.

Frank Manuel seeks return of a fireman's badge lost at Opequon Creek Park. The badge, bearing the name Frank Manuel on the front, was found at bade Co. W. McDonald and should be returned to the owner. Contact Frank Manuel.
The Sarah Zane Fire Company unanimously endorses R. B. Dick Brown to succeed the late C. Lee Barr as fire chief. It becomes the third company to back Brown joining Charley Rouss and South End, with Friendship backing Fred Forney for the post. Brown has led Sarah Zane as an officer for ten years and is praised for service to the department.
The Senate debates a conference report on an airmail bill and takes up a copyright bill while a committee studies a tax measure. The House considers private bills and the Rules committee resumes its lobby inquiry.
Mandeville W. Zenge a Missouri carpenter pleaded innocent to a charge of murdering Dr. Walter J. Bauer of Kirksville by mutilation. He was arraigned before Judge Justin F. McCarthy and remanded to custody while investigators continue. No relatives attended the crowded courtroom. Zenge noted his father had returned home to Canton Ohio.
In Tokyo a Vanity Fair August issue artwork linking Japan’s crown prince to the Dionne quintuplets drew government protest. An official said Ambassador Saito would inform Washington and publishers of the insult while awaiting Hull's response on a possible resolution.
Rome reports Mussolini mobilizes two regular army divisions and a fascist Blackshirt division plus two replacement divisions, raising Italy’s Eritrean and Somaliland forces to about 195000. The move follows heavy Ethiopian mobilization and signals broader war expansion. The Red Cross is launched in Ethiopia under Emperor Haile Selassie with a ceremonial opening and fundraising drive.

Dr. L. M. Allen health officer urges that gatherings of children are as dangerous as theaters and Sunday schools for polio spread. He recalls previous theater bans and notes today 11 new cases, seven in Albemarle county and one in Rockingham.
The Virginia health drive reports 23 new infantile paralysis cases statewide. Albemarle County accounts for 12 new cases, total in the county rising to 62 and 72 by Charlottesville officials. Aid staff sent to assist doctors. travel restrictions not advised. Scout jamboree in Washington not cancelled. officials say outbreak levels in region do not justify cancellation.
Plans to pave Berryville Avenue from the current extension to the Berryville pike Federal Route 340 will cover .37 mile and be funded entirely with federal aid. City Manager Field said efforts will push the project with plans forwarded to Richmond today.
An annual clinic by the District Nurse Association will occur Saturday August 10 at their offices. Dr R V Funsten from the University of Virginia Hospital orthopaedic department will lead examinations and advice free of charge. Only young people with deformities are urged to apply.
