Jobless Rate in Area Ahead of State Nation
Unemployment in the Winchester area trails Virginia and the nation but may improve within a year. Mezger of the State Employment Commission notes Virginia 7.7 percent in June expected to drop to 6.8 in July while national rates fall from 9.1 to 8.7 percent. Clarke and Warren counties show higher rates with Winchester at 11.2 percent. Seasonal adjustments would lower percentages by a few tenths. The trend points to a slow decline through November, with a broader return to pre-1973 levels unlikely for one to two years.
