Samuel Reid's design influence on the U S flag
When new states raised flags questions in 1818 Peter Wendover sought Reid's view. Reid proposed 13 stripes and a star for each new state with stars in parallel rows for military use and arranged in one great star for other purposes. Congress adopted this concept on April 4 1818. Mrs Reid made the first flag hoisted on the Capitol eight days later.
