A roaring blaze devastates multiple houses leaving scores homeless and severely hampering the efforts of two Winchester fire companies to bring the flames under control. Firefighters battle amid collapsing structures and shifting winds. Residents assess losses as emergency crews coordinate water supply and evacuations.
A severe fire swept Gore, Maryland, destroying the post office and much of the south side of the village. The blaze, starting in the post office, spread across a half mile front, razing a hotel, stores, a large lumber lot, and the Franks filling station. Losses are estimated around a half million dollars, dozens homeless, and two dozen injured. Postmaster Blondell Larrick and his daughter Ida narrowly escaped as flames enveloped the building. Firefighters from Winchester faced water shortages while two trucks tried to contain the blaze. The incident is under investigation with authorities noting possible arson to cover a robbery.
William A Sloat 72 a lifelong Winchester resident and prominent liveryman died about 5 AM at the East Cork street home of his aunts after years of complications from accidents. He rode large horses and ran a major northern Virginia livery business from East Cork and South Market streets. He retired 15 years ago after severe injuries from a 1881 brick wall collapse and later health decline. The Market Street church member leaves half brother John I Sloat cashier of the Commercial and Savings Bank and marks the end of a locally prominent family. Funeral at 5 PM tomorrow at John Sloat’s home 307 South Loudoun Street with Mount Hebron burial.

He was active in coal and brick manufacturing with Victor Cushwa and Son operating a local coal business and a Williamsport brick plant.

The August heat waves push Maryland and Pennsylvania into water restrictions and drought measures. In Maryland Cumberland and Annapolis enforce water limits while forests burn near Cumberland and city crews fight fires. Meantime two deaths occur in Washington County as temperatures top 100. In Pennsylvania rain promises relief in parts but officials warn it will be temporary. President Hoover orders federal drought survey with a report due next Monday.
In Virginia, the eighth district faces a wet-dry ballot while the fifth district sees party loyalty debates as voters head to the polls in the Democratic primary. Carter Glass of Lynchburg runs unopposed for re election, and five other incumbents have no challengers. John W. Tishberre, a longtime circuit judge, was declared nominated in the seventh district after no opposition emerged.
Mrs Stewart Edmonds and her son Garner Edmonds were injured in a Saturday afternoon automobile crash in Washington DC. An intoxicated driver struck their car on Eleventh Street, causing it to overturn. Garner Edmonds suffered a broken collar bone and broken shoulder blade while Mrs Edmonds sustained severe facial and head cuts but no broken bones.
Mrs. Bertie Shull Jamison of Marlboro county, widow of James Jamison and last of her father’s line, died after a long illness at Middletown home of Mrs. George Sedgwick. Aged 85, she was born in the county and lived nearby. Funeral at Middletown home tomorrow at 11 with Rev. Jones, burial Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester. The cortege will arrive by noon.
C O Carr longtime manager of the Fauquier Hatchers in Marshall Virginia died after a long illness in Washington Emergency Hospital. He was sixty four and buried in Indian Head Maryland. Survived by a widow a son Glennor and a brother A A Carr of Pittsburgh. He was a native of Indiana.
Tonight at the Appleway venue Andy Bell and Amos Shryock will perform a miniature show. D EF Stultz and Lester Ar Olc are listed among participants. Attendees can drive to the camp and stay overnight if needed.
The Winchester division of the American Red Cross aided victims of a half million dollar Gore Virginia fire. Under Miss Martha Stowers the organization provided medical care and clothing from emergency supplies. Seven families lost homes. some saved wool furniture. one family lost all but night clothes. Red Cross seeks clean pillows sheets bed spreads dishes and kitchen utensils and will pick up items by calling headquarters at 113.
President Hoover appointed Brigadier General Ben H. Fuller as commandant of the Marine Corps succeeding the late General Wendell C. Medille. Major General Douglas MacArthur was named chief of staff of the Army succeeding General Charles P. Summerall.
A large number of reporters and photographers gathered at Gore to cover the blaze. Telegraph and telephone lines stayed busy all afternoon as accounts streamed in for Washington and Baltimore papers and others nationwide.
The American freighter Chickasa owned by Moore MacCormick of Baltimore collided with the Swedish freighter Semmern near Stockholm. The Semmern was cut in two and four men were reported missing. The Chickasa, lightly damaged, was expected to reach Stockholm later today. The Chickasa sailed from New York July 24 bound for Copenhagen Stockholm and Leningrad.
The Ladies' Sodality of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church invites the public to a yard party and supper in the sunken gardens at the church rectory from 5 30 to 10 30 p m on Wednesday and Thursday August 6 and 7.
