San Francisco health officials ordered hairnets for long haired waiters in the Haight Ashbury district as a sanitary precaution. Public Health Director Ellis D. Sox noted current law mentions only female staff and said long hair poses a risk of hair in food, requiring nets or confinement regardless of sex.
Navy Cmdr M Scott Carpenter resigns from the space program to become chief aquanaut for the Navy. The former Aurora 7 pilot and one of the first seven Americans to orbit is to lead aquanaut training and ocean floor operations during the Scalab IIl mission off California beginning May 30 1968. He plans to retire from the Navy after about a year to pursue oceanography work with a private aerospace firm.
