Flights Made With One Plane By Byrd Explorers

Navy planes from the MacMillan Byrd Arctic expedition assembled at Etah Greenland and made an 80 minute water takeoff. Commander Byrd reported work underway since sunrise with NA-2 and NA-3 erected, and a successful test hop at 9 p.m. amid garbled details. Reporters at Arlington Heights heard a direct radio contact with 9-XN station in Greenland as the expedition answered queries and shared lighthearted remarks about the World Series. A heavy snowstorm later interrupted the telephonic contact, delaying further flights and testing. Lt. Comdr. McDonald noted he shot his first polar bear last week.
