Soviet trio begins non stop North Pole flight to San Francisco
Three Soviet airmen started a 6,000 mile non stop flight from Moscow toward San Francisco. Pilot Sigmund Laveneffsky and companions began over the Barents Sea at 2:25 p m local time. They averaged about 108 miles an hour and aimed to keep altitude around 500 meters to prevent ice buildup. The mission marks the first projected non stop crossing of the Pole from Europe to America.
