Oil-Eating Bug Eyed as Means of Keeping Bermuda's Beaches White
Bermuda scientists study arthrobacter a tiny oil eating bacteria found by Tel Aviv researchers as a potential solution to tar pollution washing ashore from Atlantic tankers. The Bermuda Biological Station tests show the microbe can clear half a ballast tank’s oil in a week while remaining inexpensive to cultivate and turning into fish food after use. The plan could reduce beach tar at its source if tanker owners adopt the method amid ongoing pollution and shifting shipping routes following the Suez closure.
