The Winchester Evening Star features Irene Karistedt a 16 year old from Sweden photographed near a Vadstenarene tower. The scene notes her linguistic skill in four languages and her connection to Scandinavia while visiting far from her homeland.
East Germany warned of limits on travel between East and West, citing a polio epidemic. Western observers feared border closures as 30,444 refugees entered West Berlin in July amid ongoing polio cases in West Germany.
Mrs Gladys Woodward aged 50 of North Kent Street sustained very minor injuries after being struck by a 1955 Ford sedan driven by George E. Sloane of East Kern Street as she crossed Kent Street from east to west. A Memorial Hospital spokesman said she was examined and released. Officers Alvin Johnson and Basil Cooper reported the incident.
In Haysi and Bartlick Creek area of Dickenson County heavy rain caused flash floods. A farmer Jimmy Nowlin of Bartlick Creek died. his two sons unnamed. About 50 residents were cut off as floodwaters swept away six houses and two general stores and forced evacuations.

Kenneth C Patton and Daniel Grimes were named as co directors of the 1962 Apple Blossom Festival Grand Feature parade to be held May 4. The announcement was made at the Lions Club luncheon by President Charles A Dorton Jr. Both men, Handley High School Class of 1938 graduates, have long Lions Club and festival ties and have led parade committees in recent years. Patton is president of Dixie Beverage Co. in Winchester and active in state beverage groups.
Frederick County will open schools on September 1 under Superintendent Robert Ayler. Labor Day is September 4 with classes resuming September 5. Principals meet August 24 25 and teachers begin August 28 for four days. Sixteen schools operate this year including the new Kline Elementary near James Wood High School with Frank L. Whitacre named principal of the new school.
President Kennedy received the disarmament chief John J McCloy for over an hour at the White House on his Moscow talks with Khrushchev. Secretary of State Dean Rusk prepares to meet British French and German ministers in Paris on Berlin. Khrushchev reiterates signing a peace treaty with East Germany this year and opposes Western access to West Berlin.
The Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously raised President Kennedy’s request from 3.8 to 4.5 billion dollars for military strength. It also approved nearly a billion more for bombers missiles and satellites as Congress moves to ready the U S against Soviet Berlin threat. The panel backed extensive defense spending and a separate measure authorizing up to 250000 ready reservists for one year.
Maurice Blosser of the Cork Street Christian Church and Valley District president will preside over the 112th Disciples convention in Strasburg on Thursday and Friday. Rev. Stanley Dysart, Cork Street Church pastor, serves as vice president of the gathering with delegates from Northern and other congregations.
