The State Commission on Conservation and Development plans to hire a detective agency to investigate and prosecute vandalism of historic markers. Five markers have been knocked down on highways including Richmond Washington and Williamsburg roads, with 500 markers in place and 250 more planned as County Line Markers.

Ten year old Little Johnny Stottlemyer posed as a detective and trapped Lyle Strausnider after a bicycle theft. He led officers to the culprit at the Western Union Telegraph office and al lended the thief to Justice Court for hearing. The owner, Clifford Copenhaver of the local post office letter carrier force, recovered his bike.

Blast at Indiana Refining plant injures fifty
An oil explosion at the Indiana Refining Company plant in Lawrenceville Indiana injures between 40 and 50 workers. Thirty six are rushed to Vincennes hospital after first aid at the company hospital. Foreman Lewis Hensley is reported the most seriously burned.

Four Killed When Train Strikes Car at China Grove
Four people died instantly and a fifth was badly hurt when a Southern Railway passenger train collided with an automobile at a grade crossing in China Grove. The victims were Mr and Mrs Toplin of Oaksboro and their nine year old son, along with Mrs W B Hartsell of Oaksboro. Hartsell, the car driver, was seriously injured and may die.

A steel gate at lock No 6 on the Welland Canal in Thorold Ontario collapsed injuring about 20 and killing at least nine workmen. The 500 ton gate was being raised when a crane boom slipped. About 40 workers were nearby at the time.

J Wilson Smellie longtime Frederick county resident died at his Burlick road home after a long illness senile gangrene was the cause.
