London April 30 The Soviet Pravda declares difficulties block a world security league but insists they must be surmounted. It argues that collaboration among the great powers has grown during the war and should not be abandoned despite fears.
London and Moscow quotes depict Berlin under siege with Tiergarten and Reichstag districts in heavy fighting. Zhukov and Konev command Red Army forces as reports claim imminent German capitulation and possible May Day victory announcements.
General Mark Clark announced a near total German military collapse in Italy. American Fifth Army and British Eighth Army captured Milan Venice and Genoa and reported over 120000 Allied prisoners. Armies reached the Swiss border and Piave River as Allied advance pressed toward Yugoslav junction.
At the United Nations Conference a Latin American push seeks Argentina’s invitation to join. Molotov signals willingness if Poland is invited too, while Britain and the United States oppose the Polish plan. Steering Committee faces potential deadlock as Chile or Brazil may push Argentina’s inclusion.
Mr Winchester appeals to the public to donate blood during May 2 to 4 at the Blood Donor Clinic Registration office near People’s Drug Store. He emphasizes blood must be replenished from living donors and urges physically fit individuals under 59 and at least 110 pounds to volunteer for the Red Cross.
Governor Darden told the Virginia Constitutional Convention that Americans should retain interest in home affairs and be considered part of their communities while wartime demands may limit or deter voting access and interest.

Hale Moore from Winchester, who has given blood ten times, registered for his eleventh. Capt Mary McCone, Army Medical Corps chief nurse, appeals for more donors as fighting grows more desperate and every pint counts.
Moscow hosts its greatest May Day preparations since the war began with illuminated streets and lit windows signaling the blackout ending. A two day halt follows and a Red Square parade will occur for the first time since the outbreak of the war.
British armored forces push 26 miles in southern Burma toward Rangoon, within 36 miles of the city. American infantry seize Baguio and press toward Davon as Okinawa and Machinato airstrip gains unfold. Tokyo says Japanese planes attack American ships near Okinawa. U S hospital ship Comfort damaged. Nipponese losses listed with 6 000 American casualties for Okinawa and the Philippines and 8 561 Japanese dead in the Philippines.
The Frederick County School Trustee Electorial Board elected Charles E. Bass of Stephens City as school trustee from the Opequon District at a meeting this morning. Bass, superintendent of the Grove Lime Company, will succeed Fred J. Larrick on July 1 for a four year term. Larrick has served since June 27, 1929.

A Japanese plane struck the U S S Comfort, a hospital ship 50 miles south of Okinawa, killing 29 including Army nurses and personnel. The attack damaged the stern area and rudder while the ship remained able to move with aid arriving to transfer more doctors and supplies.
County agent I Fred Stine notes some fruit growers may add tomatoes to supplement apples frozen in April. He expects 1945 tomato crop not to exceed last year due to unimproved labor. Beamer of VPI outlines contract prices at 81 cents per bushel and lists certified canneries. planting advised for late May to early June with Rutgers and Marglobes favored for cannery use.
S. R. Sammis local manager of the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Office says revoking WPB quotas will not bring immediate relief to about 300 applicants seeking service here. He notes exchanges run near capacity and only about 100 new subscribers could be added without enlarging central facilities. new telegraph and teletype service remain limited to essential users. The WPB plans to allow installations as materials and manpower permit, and CP&T plans farm telephone service expansion when war permits. Continued on Page 3.
The Sunday collection described as excellent and beyond expectations gathered 10 tons of clothing 11000 pounds of newspaper and paper scrap and 2000 pounds of tin in Winchester. A city survey at 1 45 pm showed bundles lined up before most homes as 75 percent of areas participated. Community groups businesses and Scouts received praise for support and publicity.

Congressman A Willis Robertson reports the War Food Administration will buy five hundred thousand extra bushels of apples for the school lunch program. Uncertainty remains about effects on Virginia’s vast stored supply. The plan includes propping up dried apple prices and purchasing excess from processors at the support price if markets fail.
