Crowds lined the parade route for a two day festival with about 3 Frederick County school children participating in the theme Apple Blossom Time in the Valley. Clowns, bands and a rainbow of color highlighted the procession with divisions on Winter Return of Sun Arrival of Spring and vivid pageantry.
Thousands gathered in Winchester for the festival opening. The parade of school children, in bright costumes, lifted spirits as nature shifts from winter to spring. Tomorrow's pageant and grand feature ball are expected to draw even larger crowds. Winchester welcomes visitors and hosts the blossoms celebration.
The schedule lists 3 p m coronation by Senator Townsend on the Handley High esplanade, 3 30 p m Dawn a Pageant of Springtime, 5 p m flag dedication on City street front, 5 30 p m dansante at Winchester Golf Club, 9 p m official Princesses reception at George Washington Hotel, 10 30 p m Queen’s Club dance, 11 a m press and photographers meeting at Apple Pie Ridge orchard, 12 30 luncheon, 1 30 queen on float, 2 00 tea dance at Maxfield, 9 30 queen’s ball, 10 30 dance, plus Saturday Gold Cup races in Warrenton and return to Richmond.
Mrs. R. E. Avey of 9 West Leicester Street is in Memorial Hospital in critical condition with a suspected spider bite. Her husband, R. E. Avey, manager of Winchester Furniture, says a blood transfusion was given and her status is serious but slightly improved. doctors note black widow spiders as a possible cause described with distinctive red belly spot and common hiding places.
The regular monthly meeting of the Rouss Fire Company is postponed until Friday evening May 8. President M. D. Weaver notes the change and urges attendance.
Treasury Secretary Morgenthau told the Senate finance committee that the House tax bill lacks sufficient revenue to meet President Roosevelt’s goals and urged adding temporary processing taxes. He forecast a peacetime deficit of nearly six billion dollars for the current year, with a further two and a half billion for 1937, unless the executive tax program is enacted.

The House appropriations committee approved a peace time naval bill totaling 531,068,707 for adding ships, fighters, and personnel to strengthen sea defenses. It authorizes two new battleships and outlines broad growth in enlisted ranks and ongoing construction of 84 vessels plus 12 destroyers and 6 submarines.
Albert William Orndorff six of near Capon Bridge West Virginia is hospitalized at Memorial after dynamite caps he played with exploded. Physician reports condition fairly good after he arrived yesterday evening suffering shock loss of blood and amputations of his right thumb and index finger plus facial hip and foot lacerations from striking seven or eight caps with a hammer.
Secretary Ickes declined to say if he would follow Secretary Wallace and affiliate with the Democratic party. Both he and Wallace were formerly active in Republican politics.

Washington police Inspector Bernard Thompson said Ball of Clarendon and Townes of Washington were taken into custody for investigation in the Hilda Utterback kidnap case. Loudoun county authorities denied any arrests. Townes reportedly was taken to Leesburg. Utterback was reported found bound on a vacant farm tenant house.
William H. Reaguer, 57, Culpeper undertaker, faced jurors as defense and government lay out final arguments in the case of the slaying of 21 year old Mrs. Willie Mae Wood. Defense contends the victim went willingly with Reaguer and that he is insane. government to close its case this afternoon.
George W. Wright a 48 year old railroad engineer was in critical condition from acid burns after being admitted to a Norfolk hospital. Police sought to determine how the injuries occurred and Wright's wife Mrs Viola Wright said she did not know how her husband was burned. He remained in a coma unable to provide investigators with details.
Twenty specially painted Chevrolet cars were lined up to serve as the fleet for Queen Shenandoah XIII and the Apple Blossom Festival. The vehicles, apple green and burgundy, carry green license plates and were loaned by Chevrolet Motor Company via G. R. Weeks of Baltimore. The Baltimore plant, led by H. H. Howard, builds up to 80 000 units annually, with Herbert Schutte as local dealer manager and assisted by S. R. Garber and Weimuahly.
Winchester welcomed thousands for the opening of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival with the Dawn pageant. Miss Cornelia Anne Larus of Richmond was crowned at 3 PM by Senator John G. Townsend Jr. The event featured cadets escorting “Her Majesty Queen Shenandoah XIII” and a broadcast plan by NBC and Red-Blue networks.
Hoye Riley reports progress on a community festival fund drive. Contributions listed include Consumers Utility Co, Winchester Retail Grocers, Hamman's Department Store, Elks Club, and several local businesses and individuals. He urged those with pledges outstanding to pay promptly to wrap up the effort.
Washington reports Speaker Byrns predicted Congress would adjourn in the first week of June and backed his forecast with a 25 cent cigar wager against Representative Snell of New York the House Republican leader.

Garbage will not be collected on Thursday Friday and Saturday April 30 May 1 and 2. Some collection will occur the following week on Thursday Friday and Saturday respectively.
