Mary Jances Crosby arrives as queen of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival with sun and 65 degree weather. She is hosted by local officials, meets celebrities, and attends coronation rehearsals, parades, balls, and public events through the three day celebration with Mantle and Tucker in attendance.
Firemen host Tanya Tucker for the Apple Blossom pre parade activities with a 3 p.m. greeting at the War Memorial Building and a 5 p.m. Firemen’s Parade led by Tucker. She will attend multiple events including a 7:30 p.m. reception at Friendship Fire Hall and a 1:45 p.m. crowning as Queen Shenandoah XLIX at Handley Bowl.
Mary Frances Crosby, daughter of Bing Crosby, arrives for the Winchester appearance and will be crowned Queen Shenandoah XLIX tomorrow at Handley Bowl. She speaks of excitement for Virginia festival life and her acting career plans at Texas University and beyond.
The Star will have reduced hours Friday and Saturday for Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival events. Tomorrow the Business Office closes at noon and Circulation at 6 p.m. Saturday the Business Office closes at 10 a.m. and Circulation at 5 p.m.

Miss Jerilynn Elizabeth Payne a Shenandoah College senior majoring in music therapy and music education is featured as May Star's Calendar Girl. The Columbia Maryland native, 21, part of Shenandoah's Cole Porter Review and active in Sigma Alpha Iota and other groups. she placed second runner-up in Miss Winchester Tri County and plans a nine month music therapy internship likely at Oxford England followed by graduate study at the University of Wyoming. She will ride the Jaycee float in the Grand Feature Parade and spend the summer in Winchester taking anatomy and physiology at Shenandoa.
Frederick County Board of Supervisors ruled the continuation or deletion of the remedial reading and math program is an internal matter for the school board. They refused to restore 37 000 dollars to the school budget, citing a 225 000 dollar cut and stating the program remains a line item under school governance. The board will advertise the current tax rate for the upcoming public hearing as discussions continue.
