U S helicopters swept over Saigon rooftops and Tan Son Nhut airport to airlift the remaining 800 to 900 Americans. Marines and civilians clashed with Vietnamese trying to scramble over the U S Embassy wall as Communist forces closed in. The final withdrawal ended America s 30 year Indochina involvement amid chaotic and tragic scenes.
Vietnamese surged over the 10 foot wall around the U S Embassy as Marines and civilians used rifle butts to push crowds back. Evacuations expanded with helicopters ferrying over 800 Marines and evacuees to ships while chaos looted embassy cars and buildings.
Hundreds of Americans were ferried to Tan Son Nhut Airbase as evacuation intensified. Vietnamese guards fired at a first bus. civilians and soldiers crowded the gates while Marines guarded the defense attache compound. Rockets overhead spurred evacuees to dive for cover as more buses transported Americans Europeans and Vietnamese from Saigon.
President Ford will crown his daughter Susan as queen of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester and then ride in the Firemen's Parade. Security for the visit includes White House and Secret Service personnel with Handley High School close two hours early before the coronation at 2 p.m. Friday. Crowds may reach 250000, with rain forecast Thursday and Friday and a clear, cold Saturday.
Tomorrow is the last day to buy local auto licenses in Stephens City and Boyce priced at 10 dollars each. Licenses must be displayed to avoid fines and court costs. The Stephens City Office closes Friday and Saturday for Apple Blossom Festival and reopens Monday at 8 30 a.m.
President Ford ordered a helicopter and marine evacuation from Tan Son Nhut as more than 4 500 Americans and South Vietnamese were pulled from besieged Saigon. An unexplained order delayed 81 helicopters by about an hour before landing. American forces planned transport to Subic Bay Guam or possibly Hawaii.
