North Vietnamese forces drive toward Hue and Quang Tri, cutting Highway 1 and overrunning bases. The siege tightens as U.S. air support and evacuation efforts race to assist defenders amid mounting casualties and refugee flows.
The AP reports on the besieged area south of Quang Tri City where bodies and body parts lie along Highway One. Barricades manned by about 50 South Vietnamese troops block the road as North Vietnamese forces close in within 500 yards.
President Nixon's family assistance plan is rejected by the Senate Finance Committee 10 to 4. The panel substitutes a workfare system cutting welfare for families with no children under six and moving 1.2 million parents to a Federal Employment Corporation, demanding work for benefits. Secretary Elliott Richardson calls the move a nine billion dollar step backward.
Most of the nation sets clocks ahead one hour at 2 a.m. as Daylight Saving Time begins across the country. The period runs until October 29 when Standard Time returns, restoring the last hour. Additional items note local shop hours and a nursery advertisement.
United Methodists at the Atlanta conference approve school busing for integration and oppose anti busing legislation. Delegates also back Project Equality equal employment, seek dialogue with Jewish communities, and support church union talks. They call for privacy protections, marijuana law reform, abstinence from marijuana, and oppose no knock entry provisions in crime bills.
Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music holds its 97th commencement tomorrow at 2 p.m. Dr. John G. Barker of Marshall University will give the address as Shenandoah President Robert P. Parker awards diplomas to 115 graduates. A breakfast and Alumni Day banquet precede the ceremony with over 200 expected to attend.
Air Force Sergeant Tori Olson 20, of West Laurens New York, recovered after about ten minutes of bloodless suspended animation during a liver failure operation at Wilford Hall. Doctors used a heart lung machine to replace his blood with saline then donor blood while cooling his body to 85 degrees. They expect limited active duty within 30 days.
Boyce Berryville Middletown and Stephens City hold elections Tue. Stephens City offers four year terms under new rules with four candidates for three seats. Berryville has nine candidates for four seats. Middletown fills six council posts with staggered terms and July 1 swearing in. Mayor Neil Stallings runs unopposed.
Winchester voters head to the polls Tuesday to choose a mayor and six council seats. The mayoral contest features Vice Mayor Stewart Bell Jr Democrat and H W Buller Jr Independent. South Ward includes three Democrats and one Republican for three seats Reuss Bly Foreman Democrats and Babb Republican. North Ward offers a five candidate field for three seats Mote McNemar Fleming Zuckerman Keyton all with party affiliations noted.
The Antique Automobile Club of America hosts its 14th annual car show in Winchester with over 250 entries. Judging ran from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and trophies were awarded across 45 divisions amid a warm turnout. The AACA members will tour Winchester in their vintage cars tomorrow morning.
