The 33rd Firemen's Parade in Clinton Maryland drew an estimated 8 000 spectators despite 41 degree weather. A state police escort led 184 units through Cameron and Piccadilly Street as bands twirled batonists and fire trucks roared past reviewing stands.
Janet F. Carlson an 18 year old Mary Washington college student from Lancaster was chosen honorary out of town fire chief last night representing the Tappahannock Volunteer Fire Co. She will receive a trip to Virginia Beach and a trophy. Runner ups Linda Hill McLean Volunteer Fire Co. and Debra Lynn Tharpe Inwood West Virginia represented the South Berkeley Volunteer Fire Co.
Franklin Volunteer Fire Co. Cham bersburg Pa won best dressed and best appearing uniforms in the parade. Strasburg Volunteer Fire Co. was runner up with other top picks including Hyattstown Md for best pumper up to 500 gallons and Colonial Beach Va for best pumper 500 gallons and under. Ryneal Volunteer Fire Dept Martinsburg W Va earned best aerial ladder. Greencastle Anthrim Pa High School won best band under 60 players. Giles High School Pearisburg Va led best band over 60. Bethesda Chevy Chase Md won best drum and bugle corps. Shepherdstown W Va Volunteer Fire Co oldest equipment. Colonial Beach Vol Fire Co won longest distance with motorized equipment. Rogers High School Florence Ala drum major Gary Clemmons. Gay Hill Martinsburg W Va drum tamjorette. Ferndale High School Johnstown Pa majorette group. Second place honors went to Annville and Herndon Vol Fire Co for best over 500 gallons. Purcellville Va Rescue Hose Co No 1 Greencastle Pa best pumper 500 gallons and under. Jefferson City Tenn Jefferson High and Warrenton Va William C Taylor High for best bands under 60. Kecoughtan High Hampton Va and Rogers High Florence Ala for best bands over 60.
Elizabeth Jane Henderson of Winchester England is crowned Miss Shenandoah XXXIX at Handley Bowl as rain dampens the ceremony. Spectators braved wet weather while Massanutten Military Academy cadets led a color guard and 34 princesses processed in pink and green gowns.
The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival Queen and court skipped the outdoor coronation view due to cold, retreating into the Handley School building. The piece recalls royal duty versus symbolic royalty and notes the queen’s Naval-officer father urging her to stay warm.

Guests included Festival Queen Jane Henderson of England and Australian TV star Glenys O'Brien, with Gov. Mills E. Godwin Jr. among notables. The event featured remarks on hats, performances by Ronnie Dove, and a parade float program including a Japanese treasureship float.
