The ninth annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom events begin with a 9 20 A M parade and antique car show by the An tire Automobile Club of America on Handley Boulevard. Queen Shenandoah XXXIII will cut the ribbon and open exhibits to the public until 3 P M. A banquet follows at 6 30 P M in the Armory and Miss Shenandoah Apple Blossom 1960 and her party dine at the Club House Shenandoah Downs Charles Town. Post time for the first race is 6 15 P M E D T with the Apple Blossom trophy presentation by the queen.
In Seoul the ousted leader Syngman Rhee and his family left the presidential grounds for a hillside villa, greeted by cheering crowds as his 12 year rule ended amid riots. Acting President Huh Chung named six independents to the cabinet, while the defense ministry remains vacant. Arrests were issued for Choi and other Rhee aides. reports say Lee Kang-hak and Han Hi suk were implicated. The army announced the death of the vice president-elect and his family by their own hands at a staff member’s home, with his elder son later linked to the events.
The Apple Blossom Festival Grand Feature Parade will be larger than last year with 201 units and over three hours to pass a point. Grand Marshal Texas John Slaughter Tom Tryon leads off at 2 p.m. Friday along Handley Boulevard in the two to four mile Trail of Pink Petals. Almost all units are bands with 93 bands from schools and colleges plus drum and bugle corps. Fifty one floats from Virginia and nearby states will be judged. Miss Alice Sue Williams Miss Virginia will ride. Handley High School band opens the line followed by Miss Mendonca of Hawaii and her Princesses. New groups include John S Mosby Academy Rangerettes from Front Royal. Antique cars lead an advance division narrated by George Norton and Bobbie Huffman. Partial clearing expected as Winchester prepares a Hawaii themed salute with Governor William J. Quinn crowning 20 year old Smith College junior on the Handley High School steps. The event features the Virginia Military Institute Glee Club, Hawaiian dances, and a large 280 unit Firemen’s Parade proceeding at 6 p.m. A final Grand Feature Parade at 9 to 10:30 a.m. includes reenactments of Civil War units and a fireworks display after the route.
