Senator Pat McCarran of Nevada, a key Senate judiciary panel member, urged acceptance of a compromise to expand the court from nine to eleven justices. He said he would oppose the President's bill as written, which could name up to six new justices, unless those over seventy are excluded.
Samuel Steiner deputy fire marshal from Richmond Virginia visited Winchester today in good humor after inspecting dry cleaning establishments for code violations under the National Fire Underwriters. He praised the city for providing each place a clean slate and urged continued care.
In Fort Loudoun before 1886 Captain Van Fossen led a public school with pupils slipping away for water until two remained Admiral Louis M. Nurton and George Baetjer. Van Fossen awoke and dismissed the class, illustrating how curiosity interrupted the lesson.
The Swift Mission Brigade drum and bugle corps from Pittsburgh will march in Winchester’s Apple Blossom Festival Trail of the Pink Petals parade barring unforeseen floods. W A Baker says the brigade raises funds at a Pittsburgh bazaar to cover travel costs and has earned national honor for their bid to attend. White House aides disclosed early today that they used subterfuge so President Roosevelt could sleep well before his southern fishing expedition. Stragglers were told the train would depart at 1 am, so all were aboard by then, but the train did not leave until 6 am.

Frank M. Boucher of Baltimore will lead newsreel cameramen press photographers and news writers for the Apple Blossom Festival. Fram as chairman for twelve years and Tom Baldridge will assist in photo and press relations. The committee will set quarters at the George Washington Hotel and begin operations the Thursday before the festival. Ground work with news reel companies wire services reporters and staff writers has been completed. Most reporters and photographers who covered Winchester last year will return plus new entrants have accepted the invitation.
At a directors meeting H B McCormac was re elected president for the year ahead along with J Fred Thwaite vice president George B Bushnell cashier and Floyd Haines assistant cashier The annual stockholders meeting reported excellent business and a sound Union Bank condition Board members including H B McCormac J Pred Kwa'te John H Rosenberger W A Bat ley J Jackson Coleman Dunn e P McVicar J W Richare and Bury P Harrison were re elected for another term.
John Garland Pollard former Virginia governor from 1930 to 1934 died in Washington at 12 40 a m after a two week siege of bronchial pneumonia. He later chaired the Board of Veterans Appeals and served in the Veterans Administration. He leaves wife Violet McDougall two sons John Overland Pollard Jr and Charles Beard and a daughter Mrs Lee Boatwright. Funeral at Grove Avenue Baptist Richmond with burial at Hollywood Cemetery.
A Frederick county jury awarded the administrator of Dorothy Mae Bunner nine thousand dollars after nearly four hours of deliberation. The 12 year old girl was killed when struck by a car last March at Gore. Defendants Daniel McFarland and D H Senciadiver Jr. were represented by T Russell Cather and George J Fleigelman. The plaintiff was defended by Kern and Kern. Judge Philip Williams thanked the jurors for their attentive service.
Chief C. W. Hollis said this afternoon that special police are now being engaged for duty during the Apple Blossom Festival. Persons interested in this work are requested to submit their applications as soon as possible. The number of applications received so far has been less than expected. A number of additional men must yet be engaged.

He asks if the site is marked and seeks references about Holmes public service. Dr. Anderson will assemble researchers to verify details and welcomes input from descendants.
Richmond and counties Culpeper Orange and Fredericksburg faced widespread damage as floods crest and recede. Red Cross sent relief workers Catherine Ferrell Ray Eaton Ella Bell to coordinate sheltering and recovery while gas service and roads endured disruptions. 100 plus families left homeless, river Rapidan and James floods cited.
Burr P Harrison will represent B C Cline of the Winchester police against Charles Farmer in a $10,000 personal injury suit. A summons was issued for June 7 returnable in Corporation Court. Farmer, arrested during Apple Blossom Festival for drunk and disorderly behavior, was released after charges were dismissed.
