Judge A. J. Tavenner, admitted to Winchester Memorial hospital on Saturday, underwent an operation this morning. His condition was described as satisfactory by his physician Dr. E. C. Stuart Jr.

A raging forest fire near Shockeys Mount in Virginia has burned about 4,000 acres of timber and pushed south into Frederick County. Hundreds of residents from the region and as far as Winchester gathered near the blaze as winds carried smoke for miles, with the fire visible at a distance.
The Tigers of the American Volunteer Group claimed a victory last Saturday over Japanese aircraft on the Burma front near Lollem on the eastern flank. no further details were provided.
Metropolitan Life seeks authority from the state corporation commission to build an $8.56 million housing development in Alexandria to alleviate a shortage of moderate cost living. The U S Navy reports the destroyer Sturtevant sunk off Florida after an underwater explosion within 24 hours. Most of the crew reached port, with little loss of life, as authorities investigate whether a mine or torpedo caused the incident. The loss marks the seventh naval vessel in the Atlantic area since last fall.
US War Department reports artillery from Corregidor shelled the Bataan peninsula and set afire enemy trucks after a fortified bombardment. Japanese dive bombers attacked Forts Corregidor and Hugh S on adjacent island, while four hours of shelling hit Corregidor. Troops landed on New Caledonia under Major General Alexander M. Patch Jr.
Lieut. Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell's Chinese army announced the recapture of Hopong strengthening the push toward Mandalay from the sea. Hopong lies about ten miles east of Taunggyi, captured last week, with Taunggyi and Mandalay area now under Chinese advance as Meiktila front fighting continues.

President Roosevelt and 13 million Americans aged 46 to 65 were called to register today to stock the nation’s manpower for fighting and non combatant duty. The 45 to 65 group avoids military service and faces occupational classification for war production. Registrants in the 18 to 20 bracket are urged to enlist while subject to registration, and the President himself registered in the White House.
At noon today 820 men aged 45 to 64 registered under the Selective Service in five Winchester locations. The count, part of the fourth registration since October 1940, lists City Hall Rens Re Friendship Sarah Zane and Court House as sites with registrations continuing until 9 PM. Homer Harl ow was the first to register at the Rouss Fire Hall and Roy A Grim at the Friendship engine house.

E C Shade showed a black stone he believes marks a meteor fall in the Blue Ridge area of Clarke county.
