Thousands of visitors fill the city as the 29th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival opens. Bert Parks will be Grand Marshal of the Feature Parade at 2 p.m tomorrow, with Cyd Charisse and N J C C president Hugh McKenna also riding in the parade.
Thousands watched Laura MacArthur of Washington DC crowned Queen Shenandoah XXIX on Handley Steps as overcast skies cleared. Lord Mayor Cuthbert Lowell Ackroyd wore full gold robes and presided over the ceremony amid 170degree heat and sunny skies.
Fire Chief Taylor L. Barr announced special first aid and fire protection for all performances of the pageant and both parades. South End equipment will be stationed at Cameron and Gerrard and Jefferson streets after the firemen’s parade, with Sarah Zane pumpers reporting to the South End fire hall. This measures ensures rapid response to traffic-clogged areas and that South End jeep patrols the parade line.

Winners included Diane Higgins Arlington Sylvia Brant Alexandria and Ann Creel Falls Church with others earning honors across junior and baby doll divisions. The College Park Volunteer Fire Department Majorettes topped the Group division with Walters Dance Centre Falls Church second and Gary High School third. Queen Shenandoah XXIX coronation and first pageant performance opened the day, with Tippy Stringer leading the Firemen’s Parade and a fireworks display planned on Handley grounds. The Grand Feature Parade slated tomorrow features 246 units and 60 floats with Bert Parks and Cyd Charisse arriving for events.
John S. Solenberger and Company and the Northern Virginia Power Company won the commercial and artistic divisions in the Apple Blossom window display contest. W Carlisle Fisher chaired the apple promotion committee. Judges included Malcolm Brown, Harry Peters, Norman Pike, and E M Jones. About 50 windows were entered. second and third places went to G and M Music Center, Schewel Furniture, and Schewell, Caldwell Sites.
Police Chief J Thomas Boyd announces Friday parking bans on Cameron Street from Gerrard to Piccadilly and Piccadilly Street from Cameron starting 6 a.m. until after the Grand Feature Parade. The notice continues on page 2 column 2.
The Grand Feature Parade forms tomorrow on Cameron Street and moves at 2 p m. The route proceeds north on Cameron to Piccadilly then west to Loudoun and Cork. It continues south on Braddock Piccadilly Washington Germain Stewart Handley Boulevard turning into Gerard Street before dispersing.
Festival program lists Friday events with opening of rides and exhibits at Handley Bowl, open air concerts by Franklin and Marshall Band and Court House Plaza, Bert Parks and Cyd Charisse appearances, Miss Shenandoah contest, Grand Feature Parade led by Bert Parks and Cyd Charisse, junior chamber luncheon, and evening dances and ball at George Washington Hotel and National Guard Armory with Boyd Raeburn Orchestra.

Firemen parade formation begins at 4 30 p m on Cameron Street between the Sanitary Laundry and the George Washington Hotel. The second division forms on side streets off 5 Cameron Street. Parade moves at 6 p m along Cameron to Baker then Loudoun Gerrard Stewart Germain and ends at Washington.
The 29th Shenandoah Valley Queen, crowned at Handley High School, is the George Washington University freshman daughter of Mr and Mrs Doug las MacArthur IT. Colgate W Darden Jr administered the oath as Lord Mayors wore plumed hats. Weather forecasts hint at showers but a sunny finish perked festival mood and an Orchard bloom photo session occurred. The Firemen's Parade scheduled for 6 p m features 243 units and 100 pieces of equipment from five states and DC with Tippy Stringer as marshal.
