The 75 000 anthracite miners at the tri district scale convention approved general contract demands for a wage boost and shorter working hours and authorized filing a 30 day strike notice. Negotiations will start in New York May 10 with AFL UMW.
Secretary of Labor Schwellenbach said he would call John L. Lewis and the soft coal operators back into joint negotiations early next week. He noted only slight softening since April 10 and urged both sides to resume talks to settle the 26 day coal strike.
President Truman met with General Dwight D. Eisenhower aboard the Williamsburg off the Virginia coast for a two hour Pacific strategy conference. The talks covered reconversion and coal strike issues with War Department chief of staff present. Snyder planned to rejoin the president before his weekend departure.
The job notice lists veterans now employed in Winchester firms. Former Capt Vincent M Noonan of Valley Service Station spent 43 months in the Army with 30 in the Asia Pacific Theater. Upton Snider of Pifer Printing Co completed 44 months service with 25 in the 674th Signal Warning Co. Former Technician Fourth Grade Robert L Sutton served 34 months with the Ordinance Department near the Philippine Islands and now works at Valley.
Paris April 26 The Big Four foreign ministers met to negotiate European peace treaties while reports circulated that Russia would block any push to discuss Austria. An American informant said Russia opposed Austria on the agenda though they supported discussing French demands to detach Ruhr and Rhineland from Germany. Bevin and Byrnes offered no comment as talks continued with reparations and Balkan treaty issues on the agenda.
In London on April 26 the half ton German time bomb known as "Annie" blown from a 30 foot shaft by a bomb disposal squad. The explosion rocked Buckingham Palace but caused no damage.
Dorothy Lamour and husband William Ross Howard III faced a theft in Baltimore after arriving from New York for a family reunion. A ventilator was pried open on one of their cars, yielding a jewel case with more than 26 000 dollars in valuables, plus a 1500 dollar fur coat and clothing including 36 pairs of stockings.
