A short but fierce engagement off Dover in the English Channel on April 20 saw six German destroyers sunk by British forces. The clash involved intense gunfire and torpedo exchanges with notable British surface ships earning a decisive victory.
Two British destroyers Swift and Broke engaged six German destroyers off Dover on April 20. In a rapid five minute battle, German ships were torpedoed or rammed while crews fought hand to hand. Midshipman Gyles reportedly fought Germans aboard a rammed destroyer before aid arrived.

A battle with nearly two hundred rats occurred Tuesday afternoon in the hay loft of Messinee's Livery Stable at Braddock and Amherst. Ninety six rats were killed on the spot, with others wounded or escaping through windows. Workmen unearthed the large nest as stable hands used clubs to kill many rats. across the street at Noonan's Livery thirteen more rats were slain.
At the close of the Baltimore wholesale markets this afternoon spot wheat stood at 2.88 12 and corn at 1.65. Winchester dealers offered 2.83 for wheat after the Baltimore market closes.

Washington April 6 The Percy Birdsall an American schooner of 1127 tons from New York was sunk by gunfire from a German submarine as crew fled to lifeboats. Nine or ten shots were fired seven hit and all crewmen were rescued by a patrol boat after about one and a half hours adrift. Built 1890 Wilmington Delaware. Crew of nine.
Three men injured in two automobile accidents near Whadstock and Stephens City on the Valley Turnpike show improvement. Charles P. Denit, Roanoke County circuit court clerk, remains most seriously hurt with concussion but conscious at times. Noah B. Kibler's condition is satisfactory after a pole collision. J. P. Saul Jr. has a broken jaw and minor injuries. Bull escaped injury. Denit was moved from Woodstock to Winchester for hospital care.
