The FBI reports major U.S. crimes rose 13.3 percent in 1956, with juveniles under 18 making 46 percent of urban arrests for major crimes. Auto thefts soared, and overall property losses reached about 440 million dollars, signaling a sharp rise in crime nationwide.
The 6th Fleet has been ordered back to Eastern Mediterranean waters amid Jordan crisis tensions. The Forrestal left Cannes with 150 crew members on leave, destination undisclosed, as Eisenhower and Dulles affirmed U.S. commitment to Jordan’s independence. The move aligns with a new Middle East anti-Communist aid doctrine approved by Congress.

The Senate inquiry targets Dave Beck of the AFL CIO Teamsters, who invoked the Fifth Amendment and has been suspended by the AFL CIO Executive Council.
Six days of heavy rain flooded central Texas towns and highways as Blanco River rose near U S 281. Five deaths reported and disaster forces mobilized. Gov. Daniel sent National Guard to Belton Killeen areas with hundreds evacuated in Killeen and South San Marcos.

Griggsville fair officials plan to offer 25 000 four dollar bills at 88 cents each for one hour daily for five days starting June 34 to prove a genuine bargain will exist in 1957. Buyers may purchase one bill at a time with no limit on repeats but must rejoin the end of the line.
Councilman H W Butler heads the public safety committee in a push to regulate dogs in the city. Mayor Claude B Smalts Jr asked for an ordinance for May 14 and urged dog owners to cooperate to avoid harsh measures.

C Douglas Brown announced retirement from the baking business effective May 1 and sold his half interest in B and C Baking Co to Ernie W. Smith. Brown co founded the company in 1929 with J Clayton Cochran, opening in a small brick building. The firm later moved to a two story building in Indian Alley behind the Lutheran Church. Smith, a World War II veteran, has risen from route salesman to route supervisor and will take over Brown's duties.
King Hussein moves to stabilize Jordan by forming a seven man moderate cabinet and imposing martial law. A total curfew hits Amman and several cities while the U S backs Jordanian independence and integrity under the Eisenhower Doctrine amid riots inspired by Communists and extremist factions.
