Officials of the 28th annual Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival moved into final preparations as crowds of up to 200000 are expected to attend events Thursday and Friday. The city braces for the multi day celebration that began preparations last year.
Pick Temple will arrive by Sikorsky helicopter at 11 a.m. Thursday at the National Guard Armory field in Winchester for the Festival parade events. CBS and WTOP officials join American Helicopter Society in coordinating air show displays at Anacostia Naval Air Station.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover reports 1954 major offenses reached 2 267 250 with one major crime every 13.9 seconds. The seventh straight yearly rise, two million plus offenses, and 34 felonies per day highlight increases in robbery burglary and larceny, while murders decline.
For the third straight year the three city banks show higher assets at quarter end. March 1953 total $25,899,277. March 1954 $28,185,650. the latest quarter $31,154,725. End of 1954 assets rose to $31,687,831, up $533,106 from 1955 Q1. Factors include community growth, new industry, water supply bond, and a strong apple crop.
Pakistan Prime Minister Mohammed Ali said Premier Chou En-lai sees a door to direct talks with the United States on Formosa as still open, though slightly cracked. Ali described a luncheon discussion after the Asian African conference adjourned.

33 honorary fire chiefs from out-of-town fire companies enter the beauty contest and grand feature parade in the Capitol Theatre area. Winners receive a white satin cape, pale blue lining, and a silver top hat, with presentations by Pick Temple and Horace Browne.
James Wood Chapter members James Alvin Johnson and Leta Mae Gunn earned high honors at the Virginia FBLA convention in Richmond. Johnson was named State vice president and Gunn won the state spelling contest to compete at nationals in Chicago June 12 to 14. Ray Hibbs of John Marshall High was named state president. Mary Catherine Adams, retiring state secretary, oversaw the awards and installation. The event marked the first time a boy held one of the top two state offices. Delegates from James Wood included Mary Ellen DeHaven and others, with chaperone Mrs Rebeca Whitlock. The United States Britain and France will meet in Paris May 8 to discuss concrete plans for a four power conference with the Soviet government They plan a London briefing April 27 to study European issues ahead of talks and hope for a prompt four power conference in which West Germany and NATO allies participate
A northern Alabama tornado killed four people including an elderly couple and two children and damaged 40 homes and two churches. A Virginia windstorm unroofed a dormitory at Eastern State College. Large hail and thunderstorms hit the Carolinas with up to four inch stones. No casualties were reported there.
Fire department director A Ryland Conner announced Thursday evening parade routes. Forming on Cameron Street between Gerrard and Piccadilly, the march proceeds north to Baker, south to Loudoun, west to Gerrard, north to Stewart, east to Germain, and finally north on Washington to disband. Hereford steer shown by Boyd Ramey Jr of Hayfield 4-H Club won grand champion at the Third Annual Winchester Junior Stock Show at the Farmers' Livestock Exchange. The 975 pound animal led 21 entries from Frederick and Clarke counties with $35 total prize and a tie clasp. Reserve Angus honor went to Danny McIntyre for a 985 pound steer, earning $15 and a trophy from the Virginia Angus Association.
High winds in the Nevada desert forced postponement of the big atomic Civil Defense test for at least 24 hours. Dr. Alvin C. Graves, chief scientist for the tests, announced observers this morning that the test will not occur before next Wednesday at the earliest.
A local flower shop announces it will not open until after June 1. The notice is dated Hurst Rainbowridge Garden on April 23, 2021.
President Eisenhower announced plans to build an atomic powered merchant ship to travel thousands of miles without refueling as a demonstration of America’s determination for a just and lasting peace. He said Congress would be asked for funding and described freer world trade as essential to defeating domination and promoting peace.
Mary Bruce Rhodes of Handley captured first in Group II prose reading at the 40th annual champion scholastic forensic meet in Charlottesville. Wakefield High School won first in both afffirmative and negative debating. Handley team members Stephen Brown Eugene Miller Janet Stanley and Betty Jo Johnson participated. Miss Sarah Heatwale accompanied the group.
