An unstable financial institution on Worf faced closure after a shortfall reported at $800,001. Officials indicated debts totaled around $4,000,000, triggering a formal shutdown and liquidation steps. Local authorities, creditors, and customers awaited further action.
State banking authorities closed the City Bank of York after discovering an $800,000 shortage. Cashier Thomas B. Baird and assistant cashier W. H. Bell faced arrest warrants. Baird reportedly confessed to misappropriation. The bank, with assets over $4 million, surprised directors and depositors as the investigation began yesterday.
State Senator H F Byrd departs for Richmond to confer with his attorneys over a $100000 damage suit filed in the Richmond Circuit Court by the Virginia Highway Contractors Association after he refused to retract editorial criticisms. Maynard Kendall Ashley Halyard and William Keating were given a suspended ten day sentence for unlawfully being on John Lillis premises in police court. Russell Oates paid a 25 dollar fine for the same offense. Those named must avoid any offense within a year to avoid further penalties.
The late James Taylor McIlwee's 65 acre Frederick County property with a residence and barn will be sold at public auction in front of the Court House at noon on Saturday April 28. Sale bills note it as one of the most desirable homes in Western Frederick.

In New York on April 24 a public reception honored Agassiz Legis May Echo, No. 41302, the world’s top butter producer for a year. The Holstein produced 30,886 pounds milk and 1,245 pounds butter fat in 365 days, yielding 1,675 pounds of butter and surpassing the prior record by 86 pounds. Her weight rose by 100 pounds during the test.
The notice outlines Frederick County fishing seasons and methods, restricting bass to hook and line July 1 to January 1, allows suckers year round, and permits gigs and spears only for non bass non trout from November 1 to December 10 in certain waters. Fries as administrators with bond of 3000 dollars. Land to widow for life then to Alfred M. Fries, rest of property to be sold and divided among six children. Names include James C. Fries, Mrs Victoria C. Lewis, Anna C. Fries, Mary F. Fries, and Charles C. Fries.
Olli¢é Grim released on $1,000 bail for trial May 2 on a charge preferred by Docie Downs. His attorney sought a continuance to obtain papers from the west proving divorce from his former wife.
Dr Ernest Wurdleunier of Dickinson College unveils a portable apparatus to quickly determine alcohol content in liquids. The device promises faster evidence gathering for prohibition enforcement, with Major Adams ordering state police to adopt the instrument after a 15 minute analysis.
A box party was held at the Empire Theater in honor of Mrs. William H. Baker with guests from nearby towns and New York City. After the play, a reception for Mrs. Baker was hosted at No 5 South Washington Street with about one hundred attendees including visitors from Philadelphia and Clarke County. Supper followed late.
A. L. Dean a poultry specialist from Blacksburg will visit Frederick county April 25 and 26. Meetings are scheduled in Middletown Winchester Stephens City and Albin with sessions for both women and men. Attendees may write ahead with problems to be solved.
A weather bulletin from Washington cautions light frost in extreme northwest Virginia tonight. Winchester fruit district thermometers show 34 degrees early today, with no reported fruit damage. Commercial apple orchards in the Winchester district are expected to bloom next Sunday, near normal timing after several warmer preceding winters. An unusually heavy bloom is indicated this year.

Mrs Melvin Green hosted a tea after a session that included tree planting prizes, arborday remarks and donations for ads and campaigns.
The will of Charles K Schuller who died in the county weeks ago was admitted to probate in Frederick County Circuit Clerk's office. He leaves all personal property to his wife Lydia Jane Schuller in fee simple and the real estate to her for life. Upon her death the executor must sell the real estate and divide the proceeds equally among the children. Executed June 1920 and witnessed by Leslie D Kline and Robert B Smith. M M Lynch named executor with $1,000 bond.
The Sarah Zane Fire Company will stage minstrel shows on May 8 and 9 due to high advance ticket sales. Tickets are available at many Winchester stores as rehearsals progress. Local volunteers are invited to join tonight at 8 o'clock and an appreciation supper will fund a new pumper.
Cecil Loy faces trial in Corporation Court for the alleged hit and run injuring Mrs. M. V. Sn ake. Proceedings began after a conference. prosecution witnesses including Cecil Anderson Otto Hollar and Dr. Hugh Clark described the accident on West Water Street near the Charley Rouss engine house. Loy’s defense team and jury were selected as testimony commenced with R. T. Henson and others testifying.
President Harding arrived at Pennsylvania Station with his party in New York and moved to the Waldorf Astoria Hotel to address the Associated Press annual luncheon.

Handley High School student Preston Sartelle son of Harry Sartelle assistant cashier at Merchants National Bank is slowly improving after a boxing mishap. He fractured his arm in three places near the elbow with one fracture shattered the bone. Dr Anderson who treated him says the injury is serious though not uncommon.
A Danville report shows building costs up 30 to 40 percent from a year ago with lumber prices rising from 26.50 to 37.50 per thousand feet and flooring from 65 to 76 and 80. Millwork, steel, iron, and labor costs also increased while lime cement roofing and some items held steady.
