Frost warnings spread through Virginia as temps dipped to near freezing and damaged early apple crops especially the Delicious variety while peaches suffered lighter losses. Weather officials predicted more cold, with temperatures to fall to 26 34 degrees and clouds increasing tomorrow.
Snow fell across the Northeast whitening forsythia and slowing traffic from New York to Maine. Prattsville in the Catskills reported 11 inches with New Jersey sections at 3 inches and Connecticut with an inch. A 20 minute flurry hit Ramapo and a Manchester New Hampshire crash involved a military plane injuring a passenger.
A report notes 13 people killed in a city incident linked to alcohol and gas ignition. Frederick Clarke is named among those affected as authorities investigate the event and its casualties.

A Mohawk Valley fire in Rome New York killed seven people including five children in a two story frame home. Alex Skibitsky 47 Angela 41 Barbara 10 Peter 8 Suzanne 7 David 5 Mary Ann 3 all were asleep when the flames erupted. The father was found kneeling on a sofa in the living room. The mother died at a hospital after being rescued while holding her youngest. Firefighters said the blaze started in the kitchen on the first floor and the cause remains undetermined.
U S Attorney Paul Williams described a vicious ring specializing in faked passports that has flooded the country with thousands of Latin Americans with criminal records.
Tomorrow's Pennsylvania primary pits President Eisenhower against Adlai Stevenson for the nomination. Eisenhower appears unopposed with Knowland listed only due to late withdrawal. Stevenson runs with Kefauver as the principal rival not seeking formal ballot entry. Voter patterns from 1952 show a GOP edge in registrations and delegate prospects, with the state GOP delegation leaning Eisenhower.

Five people died in a two car collision near Gallipolis Ohio. The victims identified by state police include Alfred Kerns 22 of Clifton West Virginia Eugene Harley Trosper 25 Kermit Edwards 19 of Letart West Virginia John Asbury 21 Kanauga and his passenger Charles Edward Jackson 16 Kanauga. Asbury driving southbound struck Kerns northbound.
Secretary of State Dulles urged stronger free world unity and a broader NATO role beyond a military pact. He proposed economic development and greater independence, hinting at deeper NATO reforms to meet future needs, with plans to discuss at the Paris ministerial council on May 4.
The NAACP asks a federal court to require Prince Edward County's school board to desegregate by September 1956 under the May 1954 Supreme Court decree. An 11 year old boy with poor eyesight shot to death his mother Beatric 41 father and older brother Richard Jr in a rural Mansfield home. He said he feared reform school and was committed for a 30 day mental examination at Norwich. He reloaded after each shot and claimed his brother ignored him before the attack.
President Eisenhower’s Commission on Veterans’ Benefits urged tying veterans pensions to Social Security and phasing them out. The 70 recommendations cover GI insurance disability and survivor benefits VA structure discharge and loan privileges and serviceman benefits. Bradley led the study which warns of reduced payments as pensions would be offset by Social Security benefits.
In Birmingham Khrushchev touts a near future guided missile with an H bomb warhead capable of hitting any point in the world. He says the USSR has already exploded an H bomb from a plane and warns Western hecklers not to shake their fists at Russia.
The Supreme Court refused to review a Richmond circuit court ruling that state bus segregation violates the federal constitution. The unanimous action left the circuit decision in place and dismissed an appeal by South Carolina Electric and Gas Co.
