Violence flared at the Sperry Gyroscope Plant in Lake Success New York as 300 pickets blocked entrances and damaged vehicles during a strike over a new contract. Two workers were injured and several nonstriking entrants blocked or turned away while production remained halted.
Vice President Nixon waded into the Florida Everglades fishing trip with Gen. W. B. Persons and James Shepley. He fell overboard twice during mangrove-dense casting attempts and quipped about climbing back in the boat. No fish were caught.
Adm. Arthur Radford and Asst. Secretary of State Walter Robertson departed for Taipei on a 10 day mission to gauge Nationalist sentiment for a cease fire line in the Formosa Straits. Intelligence hints at recent Soviet jet deliveries to Red China while U S planners stress normal maintenance of contact amid a serious situation.

Five or six members of a San Francisco yachting party are believed lost after the collision of the 50 foot yawl Suomi with the Swedish vessel Parramatta off Point Arguello. A Suomi skiff was recovered and one body found near the scene, about 90 miles northwest of Santa Barbara. The group had left Santa Barbara for San Francisco, including Henry Meiggs of the Corinthian Yacht Club and Ralph Cooper.
Seaboard Railroad canceled Birmingham to Atlanta passenger service as picketing began at Birmingham yards. Union ties unclear. L&M nonoperating members said strikers did not cross lines. Violence flared at L&N station yesterday as a passenger train arrived amid a six week strike.

Wayne Young 15 would be governor with three others as officials. They kept an arsenal in a parked car and wound up in Juvenile Hall after an uncle seized the car.
Ceylon Prime Minister Sir John Kotelawala denounced communist colonialism at Bandung. Chou En Lai demanded time to reply as the session debated decolonization and peaceful coexistence. Yemen's Saif El Islam El Hassan challenged Britain's Aden claim and U.S. support for Israel.

He cites four projects within 150 miles of Washington and notes rents based on inflated tax estimates, with authority due to expire June 30 and FHA insured mortgages totaling 633 million dollars.

Defense planners praised the National Guard response in a continental peace time mobilization. More than 2,000 communities from Florida to Alaska joined the alert, with about 280,000 guardsmen at their posts within two hours of zero hour. The test assessed rapid assembly by governors and endorsed by Maj. Gen. Edgar C. Erickson.
In Palos Verdes Estates California a 22 minute underwater corneal transplant saved the bat ray named Charlie at Marineland of the Pacific. Dr H George Blasdel performed the operation using a donor billfish cornea while divers assisted. Charlie recovered and swam freely though a second eye may need later repair.
Virginia guardsmen joined thousands statewide in a surprise mobilization alert titled Operation Minuteman. The exercise tested alert times and post coverage with 12 city posts and radio links, showing high participation and a national guard spokesman noting strong first hour turnout.
Five boys aged 8 to 11 admitted drinking 112 bottles of soda in a single day at SONG BEACH California. They found an unlocked storeroom behind a cafe and drank after supper, then returned to continue. police stopped them as they carried empty bottles away. They were turned over to their parents.
