Handley High School of Winchester defeated Chambersburg 18 to 8 in a Cumberland Valley League opener. Patton limited Chambersburg to three hits as Poole collected five of six at bats and Ockman added a double while Hartzell Smith Miller and others provided fielding and hitting for Handley.

Firemen to Celebrate Annual Maryland State Convention

Firemen from Maryland Pennsylvania Virginia West Virginia and Delaware will attend the Maryland State Firemen's Association convention in Frederick June 6 7 and 8. Frederick firemen will spend about one thousand dollars on prizes and rations funded by local business leaders. A highlight is an exhibition of one of the oldest fire engines in the country the Friendship Voters Fire Association engine purchased by George Washington in 1774, a treasured firefighting relic from Alexandria Virginia.

Three Dancers Ill in Hospital From Contest

Mr Jolley Dies at 75 From Acute Indigestion

John Jolley a respected farmer from near Reynolds Store in this county died at midnight on Thursday from an acute indigestion attack. He was 75, survived by his widow a son George Jolley of Berkeley Springs West Virginia and a married daughter. Funeral was held at Wesley Chapel at one this afternoon with burial in the nearby cemetery.

Woodstock Va April 21 The Board after receiving a budget from the County School Board laid a school levy of 57 cents same as last year. A 65 cent levy requested was refused. Men and Black Cat Plunge Into River Car Crash

Travelers watching near Shenandoah River in Shenandoah county saw a large car leave the road at Red Banks Mount Jackson and tumble down the bank. Two Baltimore men and a black cat were rescued as the car stretched along the river, then surfaced after being raised by block and tackle. Both men sustained minor cuts and bruises and the car, damaged but operable, was driven away.
