Allied airmen raided Rabaul destroying 40 Japanese planes on the ground in two raids. Explosives wrecked Lakuani airdrome runways and damaged at least one Japanese ship in Rabaui harbor. Flying boats were set on fire as pilots pushed through tropical storms and heavy anti aircraft fire.
A seven member GOP resolutions committee was named by chairman Joseph W. Martin Jr to present policy clashes on the war. Members include Walter Hallanan David Ingalls Werner Schroeder Wallace Townsend Gladys Knowles Pearl Sayre Robert Burroughs. The group will consider Taft Brooks and Wilkie lines and face Weeks sharp criticism.
The U S Justice Department filed suits in Federal District Court to enjoin Carnegie-Illinois Steel and Jones and Laughlin Steel from violating War Production Board priorities. The action seeks to force compliance with WPB orders and prevent handling iron and steel products out of line with WPB regulations. Federal offices in Wilmington Delaware and Pittsburgh Pennsylvania host the suits, representing more than a third of national steel output and tied to Roosevelt's blueprint for victory and shipbuilding goals.
Local youth Baughman, an 18 year old graduate of Stephens City High School class of 1941, becomes the first to pass the Aviation Cadet exam at Handley post. Seven candidates from the area seek Army Air Corps training. six others qualified earlier in Richmond or other centers.Lieut. Beard addressed Handley High School seniors as the age limit for cadets is 18 to 26.
An out of state driver told the court he was sorry for a traffic violation. The State stressed that an accident can occur in a second and urged motorists to observe the 40 mile per hour limit. The wind today highlighted the need for extra caution as May 1 brings strict enforcement of the rule.
The Rev. Carlyle McDonald from Powhatan Va has accepted a call to the Opequon Group of Presbyterian Churches. He will begin June 1, will commute from Union Theological Seminary to conduct services for four churches and preached his first sermons yesterday at Opequon Memorial Kernstown and Opequon Chapel. He is unmarried and plans his first full time pastorate in this historic district.
In Vichy on April 20 Pierre Laval denounced France’s declaration of war on Germany as a crime. He appealed to farmers and called for efforts to save the country.
Miss Ruth Harris of the State Tuberculosis Association tours Frederick County presenting slides on tuberculosis detection. She visits Gore, Clear Brook, White Hall, Bryarly, Gainesboro, Middle Town, Stephens City, High View, Shenandoah Valley Academy and Kernstown with several talk times and invites parents to join students.
General George C. Marshall and Harry L. Hopkins delivered a report on their London war conferences to President Roosevelt at a luncheon. They accompanied British officials and had two weeks of talks with top Allied leaders including Prime Minister Churchill.
Applications for 33 tires were approved by rationing boards in tei mee ge pad and Frederick county last week. Fifteen were truck tires four retreat truck tires four passenger retreads were new passenger tires and four obsolete passenger tires. Twelve truck tubes and four car tubes were also issued. Names addresses and competition of those who secured tires are listed.

Richmond, April 20. L. M. Walker Jr says the agriculture department will act as a clearing house for city workers seeking farm labor. He urges city residents with farm backgrounds to visit farms during peak seasons such as potato digging on the eastern shore in June, haying in August, or apple picking near Winchester.
An anti-aircraft officer returning from Malta says casualties on the island were extremely small despite daily bombing. He cites effective Maltese air defense against Junkers 88s, notes high altitude Italian raids, no material shortages besides sleep, and a feeble Italian torpedo attack on Valletta harbor where only one boat breached the barrier.

Trust Officers Of Zone C will meet in Winchester on Monday April 27 under Zone C Group III and Virginia Bankers Association sponsorship. G Frank Butsler of Farmers and Merchants Bank announced the program includes Gilbert Stephenson of the ABA Graduate School of Banking, with bank talks on trust services and a luncheon at the George Sea Hotel. A 3:30 p m trust conference led by Stephenson will follow the luncheon and discussions on life insurance proceeds.

The Winchester Volunteers Firemen Association will stage a benefit bingo party at Sarah Zane Hall on May 7 at 8 30 for funds to buy a central fire alarm system for the City. An entry coach will be provided.
War Department reported an aggressive assault on Corregidor with new bombardment positions on a peninsula and Manila Bay shore. Five dive bombing raids hit the fortress while defenders neutralized three batteries and disrupted concentrations on Bataan. Near Mindanao and Panay, Japanese troops suffered casualties as patrols attacked troop transports and island defenses.
The Rev. Charles Coughlin of Royal Oak announces personal responsibility for control of the magazine Social Justice and its policies and contents in a public statement dated April 20. He says Social Justice would investigate the publication and its editorial direction.
