Boxing icon Jack Dempsey will lead the 38th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival arriving Thursday April 29 about noon. He will attend the ladies and men's luncheons, officiate at Handley Bowl ceremonies with 1965 Queen Shenandoah Neva Rockefeller, and have a featured spot in the Firemen's Parade that night.
Easter Sunday brought sun in the morning and a high of 73 at the Winchester Fruit Laboratory before afternoon showers. Sunrise services filled churches and 700 attended the JCC Easter Egg Hunt near the War Memorial Building. Clarke County students resume classes tomorrow after spring break as schools adjust for the Apple Blossom Festival. A local sportsmen committee plans a breakfast for the next morning, while boxing legend Jack Dempsey, born in Manassa, Colorado, is noted for his historic title reign and the famed long count in 1927.

President Johnson praised Sen. Olin D. Johnston of South Carolina after his death at 68 from pneumonia following abdominal surgery. Johnston rose from a tenant farmer to the Senate, chaired the Post Office and Civil Service Committee, and had long served in state and national offices. Funeral services are set for Spartanburg with burial near Anderson.
Senate Republican Leader Dirksen endorsed continued bombing in North Vietnam and rejected Fulbright's temporary cease fire proposal. He argued negotiations are unlikely while the Communists dig in and warned that easing pressure could harm U.S. position and prestige. White House aides said Johnson had not discussed Fulbright’s views recently.
Soviet Premier Alexei Kosygin warned the United States that using napalm phosphorus bombs and poison gas in Vietnam could invite retaliation in kind. He spoke during a Moscow rally for Mongolian President Tsedenbal and denounced American policy in South Vietnam.
Seoul reports the government will deploy troops under Capitol Security Command if police cannot control student demonstrations protesting talks with Japan. Hundreds of police and demonstrators were injured last week, with mass actions at Seoul National University and Daegu. Talks to normalize relations with Japan near completion despite unrest.
The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival will stage Wonderland of Spring at Handley Bowl on April 29 and 30 with 600 participants from Maryland Pennsylvania Virginia and West Virginia. Groups include Orchesis Modern dance Front Royal Strasburg and more with Miss Brenda Taylor as Sun Goddess and scenes Spring Awakening April Showers and Rainbows Over the Rainbow Madison College Orchesis and Shenandoah College performers.
Communist gunners shot down two U S Army helicopters and damaged a third near Qui Nhon killing nine Americans. One copilot died after a hit to another helicopter and pilots saved the rest as missions continued north of Saigon.
A frontal system stretching across Virginia is expected to slip south today bringing cooler air and a few showers across the region. Residents should prepare for light rain and cooler temperatures as the system moves through.
