Miss Gertrude W. Barton, daughter of Mrs. Gertrude W. Barton and the late Robert T. Barton, married Arthur Maxwell Field city manager of Winchester in a small family gathering at the bride’s mother's home on South Washington street. Rev. Dr. William D. Smith officiated as the parlor was decorated with lilies and blossoms. The bride wore beaded white Georgette crepe and was given in marriage by her brother Robert T. Barton. best man was Harold Doty of Rochester, N.Y. A reception followed and the couple will tour the East before settling on South Washington Street.

Lexington Va April 19 Washington and Lee University teams with other colleges to train for potential war service. Of 485 men on campus 470 have joined the provisional training battalion and drilled since April 10. An army officer from the War Department will command the battalion and it becomes part of the officers reserve training corps with Maj M F Edwards in charge. Fifty first classmen from the Virginia Military Institute offered their services.
A plate glass at Herlon Brothers' confectionery on North Main street was broken by a brick about 10:50 p.m. Two young men Ramble Vingier and Leon Parson are linked to a street quarrel near a poolroom and Parson allegedly threw the brick at Pingrey, injuring the window. Policeman Massey filed a report and is expected to obtain warrants.
A large American flag was raised today over the Winchester Steam Laundry plant at the eastern end of Water Street. All employees are described as intensely loyal as the flag flies in a conspicuous location.

Washington April 19 Appar ently in an effort to abstruct naval secrets that were supposed to be contained in documents left in the room the quarters of the naval affairs committee of the Senate in the Capitol were broken into some time during the past night The break was discovered this morning by a MILGAONBOY who reported the matter to the sergeant alarms and a score of secret service men and Capitol detectives were put upon the case The door was shimmied evidently in haste for the heavy oak was splintered Senator Swanson of Virginia chairman of the committee declared that so far as he knew there were no papers of any value in the room
May wheat in Chicago touched 2.40 a bushel the highest price here as cash houses buy and limited offerings push up the market. Today's price stood 2 1/4 cents above the prior top of 2 357 8-4, reached Monday. Trading in the pit was lively with rapid price fluctuations on small orders.

Mrs Sarah A Frye widow of the late James M Frye died at her residence 809 South Main Street yesterday afternoon. Born January 3 1846 in Frederick County near Marlboro she married in 1868 and settled in the city. She suffered a spinal affliction for five years leaving her a helpless invalid and endured pain with Christian resignation before passing peacefully.
General Nivelle is seven miles from Laon as French forces bombard the city. Fighting rages north and south of the Aisne with German counterattacks repulsed. French dispatches report fresh assaults along the line and apocalyptic German losses in the past three days.
At the close of the Baltimore wholesale markets this afternoon spot Wheat was quoted at 2.65 and corn at 1.60. Winchester dealers offered 2.63 for wheat after the Baltimore market close.
Mr David Barton a Baltimore man Miss Virginia Hughes of WN Virgini and Miss Isabelle Baker narrowly escaped serious harm when their auto crashed on the Martin pike about two miles from Maxwell Field. The bridal party was traveling to Martinsburg to catch a train. all were shaken but unharmed as their car wrecked near the field.
Justice Tavenner in the county istrate court levied a ten dollar forfeit and costs on Earl Shade for an automobile toll evasion on the Martinsburg pike. The vehicle owner was held responsible though occupants admitted intent to go to Hagers and Welltown. Shade appealed to the Circuit Court of F county.
The DAR convention in Washington faced a violent disruption after Florence Finch of New York was accused of misappropriating DAR Magazine funds. Virginia’s Aletha Sertell demanded charges be answered, triggering shouting and a rostrum confrontation as the presiding Mrs Story and others attempted to control the scene.
