President Ford says the fall of Cambodia to communist rebels is viewed with sadness and compassion. He praises Cambodian leaders and people for their courage and the armed forces for their valiant defense as Phnom Penh fell.
President Ford urged Americans to avoid extremes and excess as he prepared for a New Hampshire visit. He defended restrained government spending and criticized Congress for expanding the budget, while signaling possible opposition from Governor Meldrim Thomson Jr. if Reagan stays out of the race. He also targeted Soviet and Chinese actions related to Vietnam and Cambodia.
Former treasury secretary John B Connally walks out of federal court after being found not guilty on bribery charges tied to 1971 milk price supports. He says he hopes to resume political life in some form, returning to Texas with his family expressing relief and optimism about the future.
An EPA study of drinking water in 80 cities shows organic chemicals in all but one supply. Administrator Russell Train says the problem is nationwide and warrants diligent safe drinking water actions. Previous research also found chemicals in Cincinnati and New Orleans. some chemicals are cancer related in animal tests.

Frederick County Parks and Recreation Director Robert Fletcher resigned to accept a similar post in Stafford County effective May 2. He has served since 1972 after earlier work in Winchester and cites high taxes and cost of living as reasons. Fletcher will lead a 480 acre park system with a 1.5 million development program, and his aides Bill Pike and Leslie Boyd will run operations until a new director is hired.
