Washington April 13 President Roosevelt pardoned Dr Francis E Townsend noted old age pension advocate as he prepared to begin a 30 day jail sentence for contempt of a House committee Townsend, 70 year old pension advocate had been convicted February 24 1937 for walking out on a committee investigating his plan to pay 200 dollars monthly pensions to everyone over 60 Townsend received the pardon while at U S Marshal Colpoys office and said Congress had vindicated him then planned to return to the west coast within days.
Lorentz Stenvig the mayor of Hell Norway visits Manhattan saying Hell is hotter than myth. He notes Hell’s population of 1 465 and claims locals would testify the place is not as black as painted.
Paris reports the French foreign office has taken steps to open talks with Italy modeled on Britain Italy pact. French ambassador to Rome could be appointed in May and Paris hopes Mussolini will respond before a cabinet meeting. The accord would cover mutual interests in the Mediterranean and cooperation while Spain resolves its civil war.
