Maryland and West Virginia company led by Joseph Natwick of Baltimore seeks 34 000 acres timberland two small tracks and narrow gauge railroad and equipment in a public sale.
The Maryland and West Virginia Lumber Company led by Joseph Natwick of Baltimore won the Winchester Lumber Corporation property and timber rights for 411200. Immediate resumption of operations was announced, with plans to deploy a large force and expand activities toward Gore and Wardensville. The sale, conducted by trustee Robert M Ward under court order, drew buyers from Frederick County and West Virginia, selling 24000 acres of virgin timber for 352000 and related railroad equipment for additional sums. Sale confirmations and further lumber auctions were set, with anticipated impact on the Winchester and Western Railroad revenue and local employment.

James H. Pop Johnson, 81, claims to be the oldest active regular army soldier, contesting Nat Poyntz’s 80. Johnson says he stays vigorous by smoking a dozen strong cigars daily and venting irritation with profanity at army mules at the Presidio in San Francisco. Born 1846 in Hanover Ohio, he served through many wars and uprisings including the Boxer Rebellion.
Mrs. Mary Strode widow of Park H. Strode died at Roger Strode’s home in Boyce Clarke County after a long illness. She leaves two sons Joseph of Stephens City and Roger of Boyce, a sister and four brothers, 14 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral Monday at Boyce Methodist Church with interment in Mount Hebron. Also announced: the 146th semi annual convocation of the Valley Convocation of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Virginia will be held April 20–22 at Christ Church Stephens City with sermons, devotions, and roundtable discussions led by clerical leaders from Martinsburg, Woodstock, Luray, Harrisonburg and others.
Weather outlook for the week ahead calls for fair conditions Monday and Tuesday with a period of showers midweek. Cold start Monday followed by warmer Tuesday and Wednesday, then cooler late week.
Alson S. Hott will lead the Virginia Leam and Thrift Corporation as manager when it opens May 1 on North Main Street.
