Chancellor Julius Raab telephoned from Moscow to Austrian conservatives declaring Austria will be free and all native soil will be recovered. He credited the Austrian people and warned that Western powers must approve any Moscow accord before a state treaty can be signed.
President Eisenhower urged Congress to approve United States membership in the Organization for Trade Cooperation to combat Communist domination. He argued joining with free nations is essential for handling trade problems cooperatively and said refusal would aid the Communist cause. The OTC was created from GATT and signed in Geneva on March 21. Senator George of Georgia was expected to arrive in Augusta as the message was sent.

Richard Booth Roan 54 of Morgantown died when his 1950 Dodge hit a concrete post and guard rail at the Shenandoah River Bridge entrance on U S Route 50 in Clarke County. The collision occurred about 9 40 p m. Roan's body was recovered after about 20 minutes. The crash, under investigation by State Troopers L P Coverstone and W B Broach, involved high speed and left the hood and debris scattered along the road. Roan was en route to visit his mother in Alexandria, Virginia. Clarke County's second traffic fatality of 1955, with related tolls noted for Virginia and nearby areas.
Shepherdstown West Virginia town council orders the old clock atop the Shepard College building repaired and started despite lacking hands. A repairer could not secure clock hands but will proceed to strike hours to benefit locals.
Rain swollen rivers moved toward southeastern Louisiana and south Mississippi after severe storms. Three people were killed and property damage reached hundreds of thousands. The Homochitto River cut a 100 foot gap in a bridge near Natchez, while another new $250 000 steel bridge was wrecked upstream. In Mobile County Alabama about 150 people evacuated and 40 000 lost water supplies near Mobile Prichard Chickasaw and Whistler.
The Frederick County School Board names enumerators for the 1955 Virginia school census. District canvassers include Ayler, Armentrout, Perrault, Havermale, Colaw, Hutton, Fletcher, and Whitacre. The survey runs April to September with a June completion goal, asking residents for names ages and school details of children and parents.

The Eisenhower administration presents details of its plan to end segregation in public schools as soon as feasible to the Supreme Court. The court may hear four days of arguments on timing and method to end segregation with Solicitor General Simon E. Sobeloff followed by other attorneys.
U S Solicitor General Simon B Sobeloff told the Supreme Court to suggest motion toward ending segregation in public schools without fixing a hard deadline. He said the Court should convey that there must be bona fide progress toward desegregation and that people should not be ridden over roughshod.
W H Fisk of Stephens City was named president of the Shenan Win Chapter Virginia Motor Court Association at a meeting yesterday at Winchester Golf Club. About 32 people from 25 motels in Frederick Shenandoah Counties attended the luncheon and the local chapter was formed as a branch of the American Motor Hotel Association.
Incumbent Commonwealth’s Attorney Joseph A. Massie Jr. faces John F. Anderson in the July Democratic primary. Also filed are Maurice W. Perry and L. Randall Omps for county supervisor seats, with two independent incumbents seeking reelection in November. Anderson is a Winchester attorney and Duke and Duke Law graduate.

In Huntsville Texas 52 inmates in a maximum security area stage a nonviolent strike demanding a third meal a day. Guards maintain a 20 foot fence line with rifles and tear gas while some inmates remain in isolation yards. The strike began after inmates had gone without food or water since Wednesday morning and the spokesman Charles Pierce wearing a red handkerchief warned against tear gas.
