Reports say King Alfonso XIII abdicated as a republic forms. Proclamations cheer in towns with widespread support while the royal family denies fleeing the country. No bloodshed reported as demonstrations erupt in many cities.
In Madrid on April 14 King Alfonso XII abdicated at 6 pm, bowing to a mass drive for a republic. Niceto Alcala Zamora, led the republic, became provisional president after an ultimatum expired, and a republican government assumed power immediately.
Paris dispatch notes King Alfonso reportedly abdicated as a republic forms in Spain. Madrid confirms a republic exists in effect with power transfer negotiations under way. Republican leader Niceto Alcala Zamora says the formal transfer and proclamation could occur at any moment.
Jim Pierce of Clarke County was released on $500 bond after being booked on two counts: driving under the influence and carrying a concealed weapon. A revolver was found in his shirt after a single-vehicle crash near Double Tollgate and a White Post sighting prompted police intervention. He is to appear before Trial Judge Blount.

Miss Nellie Brown a member of a prominent Winchester family died at her home 112 North Washington Street after a brief pneumonia illness. She was born July 13 1857 and lived her life in Winchester. Survived by one brother J Few Brown and two sisters Catherine B Dash and Emma S Brown. Funeral is scheduled at 11 o'clock tomorrow from North Washington Street residence with Rev Dr L A Thomas of Grace Lutheran Church officiating. Interment Mount Hebron Cemetery.
Local firefighters prepare plans for a torch light parade to open the Apple Blossom Festival. A meeting at the South End Engine House will finalize the parade motif with captains Richard Brown Lee Lamp Fred W Forney and L E Armel leading the volunteer companies.
Old Joe Ridley a 100 year old Black man was jailed after a nighttime moonshine operation near Rattlesnake Schoolhouse. He was held on $500 bond for grand jury action in June while a friend posted bond to release him temporarily. Casper Brown also freed on $500 bond. Officers found a missing 250 gallon still and mash containers later.
Vernon L. Engle was sentenced to 60 days in jail by Judge Donald L. Weens in police court for larceny of a typewriter from Hoye Riley. Evidence showed Riley lent the machine to Engle for repairs and Engle later sold it. Engle could not name the buyer, and the judge ordered him held until the purchaser could be identified.
Blair Bean was fined twelve dollars in police court this morning by Judge Weems after pleading drunken in public here.
Infant son of Mrs Elizabeth Greenwalt died yesterday at 1 30 PM at 38 Fremont Street from pneumonia. Funeral held at 2 PM today at the residence with Rev R E Witherspoon of Highland Avenue Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
A two alarm fire at 2 am gutted the hay and grain warehouse of L. L. Hockman on North Cameron Street, with water damage to the Fred L. Glaize lumber warehouse and oats and grain losses at J. Jos. Sullivan. The fire, likely from a shorted electrical line, burned for about 45 minutes among baled hay, wounding several electric wires.
J O Smith, a London fruit broker active in Winchester Maryland Frederick County, urges Virginia growers to use shredded oiled paper in packing apples to curb scald and bronze disease. His letter notes extended marketing requires phased distribution and highlights value gains of 2 to 3 dollars per barrel from oil-treated paper.
Frank Grim of East Cork street displayed old local newspapers, including the Winchester Item from April 6, 1896, The Star from April 23, 1897, and July 30, 1898. The Star claimed its 250th issue and high city circulation. The Item carried a large ad for Stern, Langon and Company stock sale. Grim also showed 10- and 25-cent shin-plater treasury certificates.
All members are requested to meet this evening at 8 o clock in Friendship Fire Company hall to receive instructions from Instructor Frank Campbell. It is important that every member be present.
