Landon B. Whitacre former Frederick County Board of Supervisors chairman died of a heart attack at age 54. A Gainesboro district resident, he was an orchardist and farmer and served from 1947 as county supervisor and four years as chairman. He held roles with the Gainesboro Ruritan Club Gainesboro Fire Company and Frederick County Fruit Growers and Winchester Memorial Hospital. He also served on the Winchester Frederick County Chamber of Commerce board and led the Frederick Bureau for two terms.
Soviet officials reject Western claims of astronaut deaths in space attempts, calling them fabrication. Brig. Gen. Don Flickinger of the USAF medical section labels the Soviet reply as false and argues the statements conflict with available reports.
