Austrian Chancellor Raab Arrives in Moscow for Talks

Austrian Chancellor Julius Raab landed at Moscow's central military airport to start talks with Soviet leaders on speeding up the Austrian independence treaty. Molotov and Gromyko welcomed him. U S. Ambassador Bohlen attended. Raab hoped the trip would improve relations and noted it recalled Soviet liberation of Austria ten years earlier.

Eisenhower Heads to Augusta for Work Vacation Stop in Charleston

President Eisenhower leaves by plane for a work vacation at Augusta Georgia with a stop in Charleston South Carolina where General Mark W. Clark and state officials greet him. At The Citadel he reviews cadets from a jeep and is awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws outdoors. He stays in Augusta through April 20 after the Masters. Fire destroys Miss Browns barn on Loudoun Street

A large frame barn and contents owned by Miss Minnie Brown were destroyed by fire just before 9 30 p m on Loudoun Street with neighbors alerting authorities. The blaze prompted all four city fire companies to respond and is being investigated along with a similar shed fire in the alley last Monday.

Soviet farm chiefs fired for huge winter losses

Two state farm directors in Penza and Tula regions were dismissed and ordered to personally repay large livestock losses. The move follows Khrushchev backed purge of inefficient managers across collective and state farms as Pravda notes many executives seek farm posts and training courses to fill roles. Blaze destroys 20 buildings in Bowling Green Va.

A $750000 fire raged four hours in the Bowling Green business district on Easter, leaving only six of 26 buildings standing. Two injured, eight families homeless, with a Red Cross office and Masonic hall burned. Fire traced to a barn hayloft. townsfolk recalled a 1900 blaze in the same area.

Tension Mounts In Southern Bell Strike Across States

Mob attacks on a Southern Bell exchange door followed by acid in a policeman’s eye marked the 29th day of the CIO Communications Workers of America strike across nine states. Sixty four workers have been fired since March 14 as violence and arrests spread with the Easter weekend unrest in Clinton Tennessee and Birmingham Alabama where authorities broke up crowds and detained several demonstrators.

Frederick County Supervisors Approve Tax Rate Increase

The Frederick County Board of Supervisors approved a tax rate of 2.40 dollars per 100 assessed valuation for 1955-56 at a public hearing. The increase, 15 cents from 2.25, funds schools with a general levy of 0.10, school levy 1.70, and school building 0.60. The new rate runs July 1, 1955 to June 30, 1956, following tentative approval on February 22.

Three Teenagers Among 13 Die in Highway Accidents

Thirteen highway deaths were reported over the weekend with three Wise County teens among the victims. Beverly Cooper 16 Betty Kilgore 15 and Trw'ston Hale 15, all of Coeburn, were killed when a car swerved left and hit them returning from a movie. One other teen was injured.

Record Easter Weather Draws Large Crowds in Winchester

Easter Sunday drew record crowds and heavy traffic in Winchester with 80 degree temperatures the warmest so far this year. Police reported no injuries from the weekend’s travel incidents though 13 arrests occurred. a major fire destroyed a barn on 522 N Loudoun St. Sunrise services drew about 130 people at Handley High School and the Easter Egg Hunt near the city armory drew about 1,500 children with 100 dozen eggs hidden by the Jayceettes. winners were listed as Patri- and others not fully shown.

Homemade Javelin Fatality Shocks Detroit Community

Detroit police report a 14 year old, John Gunnerson, killed by a homemade javelin thrown during play. The weapon was made from a 5 foot baseboard molding tipped with a carpenter's file, allegedly by best friend Ronald Brandon who said he heard it.
