Virginia Governor Harry Byrd addresses supporters in Bowling Green on June ballot amendments. He argues segregation is needed to localize taxation and predicts a central tax board if land taxes resume. He cites tax reductions outweighing increases and defends the plan against concerns it harms industry.
Exchange Telegraph dispatches from Bombay report a lightning strike at a village church near Kotayam in southern India during a service. The priest was knocked unconscious and later recovered as five worshippers died and others were seriously injured by burns and falling masonry.
The Bible Class of Christ Episcopal Church will meet at 8 PM Thursday at the parish house in Icelock. Members are studying the life of St. Paul and the session was announced today.
In Athens Georgia Mr Armel a local mechanic and automotive engineer is constructing a second airplane at his West Washington street shops. A previous plane named Pride of Athens has served in and around the city and recently set a record on a flight from Candler Field to Epps Field covering 82 miles in 45 minutes. Martha Ritter has returned from Easter visits in Hagerstown and Washington.

London April 11 Major Sarmento Beires noted Portugese flyer was reported to have crashed in the south of France. He was safe but his plane was destroyed. Beires recently flew from the west African coast across the south Atlantic to Fernando de Noronha off Brazil.
The Empire and Colonial Theatres announce a policy shift for Friday and Saturday programs beginning April 18. The Colonial offers western stars Tom Mix Fred Thompson Buck Jones and Hoot Gibson with the serial Hawk of the Hills moving from Empire to Colonial starting April 15. Tom Mix in A Horseman of the Plains opens the new policy with Karl Dane and George K Arthur presenting Circus Rookies as the Empire emphasizes feature length comedies on Saturdays.
Dispatches from Torreon report a tornado that struck Coahuila causing damage estimated between 10,000,000 pesos and 25,000 pesos. Cotton plantations over a wide area were completely ruined.
A. I. Sager of Kegnstown reports roving dogs killed or crippled 23 young chickens and destroyed 60 eggs in one night. Neill Cooper and Miss Veronica Miller also suffered losses as dogs invade yards. Residents advocate killing dogs on sight to stop the depredations.
Ancil lary letters testamentary on the estate of Mrs. Martha S. Tucker of Lexington Virginia, who died February 18, have been requested in Probate Court by her husband Congressman Henry Sir George Tuckes executor, appointed by the Circuit Court of Rockbridge county. Mrs. Tucker owned real estate on 831 Eighteenth Street and 1736 TI Street, valued personally at 207000 dollars, with real estate value not listed.
The Smyrna region endured new heavy quakes with four houses collapsing in Smyrna city and forty in Tireh village after a March 31 tremor death toll of sixty. Seven quakes struck Tourbali, which had been leveled before, though no additional casualties were reported.

Miss Annie Lee Hatchett of Victoria Virginia has been chosen as one of the princesses to attend the queen of the Apple Blossom Festival at Winchester this spring. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs C C Hatchett and was appointed by Hon E L Kendig.
Miss Margaret Talbott Stevens of the Baltimore and Ohio Magazine accepts the appointment as Princess Baltimore for the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival. In a letter she vows to uphold royal duties with modesty and earn the respect of Virginia’s maidens, promising photographs for the festival records. Continued on Page Three.
The General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Kansas City May 1 to 31 will feature the first invitation of a rabbi, Rev. Dr. Edward AL Israel of Baltimore, plus Rev. Russell Wilbur a Catholic priest from St. Louis. Bishop Luther B. Wilson of Baltimore retires. he has long ties to the Baltimore Conference.
Democratic national chairman Clem L. Shaver said the party will have close to 300000 dollars as a campaign fund. He noted the Jackson Day dinner in Washington netted at least 150000 dollars, placing the party in better financial shape than in many years.
A race train bound for the Heughen track collided with an empty train near Gare du Nord in Paris. Fifteen people were killed and about 30 injured. nine bodies were recovered from the wrecked car as it caught fire. No Americans were reported among the casualties.

In Columbus Ohio on April 11 the State Supreme Court refused bail for George Remus the Cincinnati wife slayer. He must remain at Lima Hospital for the Criminally Insane until further action and his fight for freedom continues.

The regular monthly meeting of Turner Ashby Chapter U Sp C is set for Friday afternoon April 13 at 3 30 at the home of Miss Guecy Russell South Washington Street.
The body of John M. Stickel, 26, of Weston West Virginia, was brought to Roanoke for burial at Mount Hebron. He was unmarried, survived by two brothers Harold B. and Ralph, and two sisters Helma Stickel and Mrs Herbert Briggs. Services at the grave were led by Rev. Robert B. Nelson with pallbearers A Taylor Ritter, Paul Massey, James Jay, Harvey Carper, Mr Perry, and Roy Carper. Mrs W D Myers and her children are visiting relatives in Roanoke.
The Apple Blossom Festival committee has secured only 128 rooms for visitors, well below last year’s 400 plus. Residents are urged to fill the enclosed form and mail it to Andrew Bell, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, to offer available rooms in Winchester and Frederick County.
