Paris reports Allied lines hold in Burma as Japanese drive nears Imphal. Kohima claimed fallen by Tokyo. British and American broadcasts note renewed pressure and outflanking attempts. Stalin proclaims Odessa's capture as a decisive Soviet victory against Germany turning the Black Sea war.
Washington April 10 President Roosevelt travels south for a two week vacation to rest and recover from lingering bronchitis and cold. He is accompanied by Admiral Leahy Vice Admiral McIntire Rear Admiral Brown and General Watson. White House says reporters will not publish coverage until his return.
American air task forces totaling 1000 to 1500 bombers and fighters attacked Belgian and French targets for a third straight day. Fortresses and Liberators hit Evere and Vilverde repairs depots, Bourges factory, Melsbroek airfield, and Orleans airfields, with losses and enemy planes reported.
Allied forces reported renewed shelling of Cassino as New Zealand troops attacked two German strong points near Sant Angelo, three miles south of Cassino. Cassino itself endured heavy mortar and artillery fire amid observations of German movement and tank activity in the Garigliano and Ausente valleys.
The spring meeting of the Medical Society of Northern Virginia is set for tomorrow at City Hall Front Royal. Topics include Newer Drugs and Their Usage presented by invited Dr H B Mulholland of Charlottesville or Dr L Allen of Winchester. Case reports from Dr P W Boyd Dr Leslie M Bell Elizabeth Sherman and Dr W E Lynn. The session begins 11 30 with Charles O Dearmont White Post as president and Dr B B Winchester as vice president.
Germans evacuate Odessa under Soviet pressure as Russian armies push on the Czechoslovak border and sweep the Carpathians. Iasi threatened. Allied air forces pound German repair plants and air bases after a RAF raid near Paris. New Zealand troops attack a German strongpoint in Burma as the Japanese mount a siege near Imphal and press Kohima, near the Bengal Assam railway.
Allied bombers attack Hol Landia New Guinea striking the air base and dump explosives on Wawak Rabaul Kavieng and the Truk base in the eastern Carolines. The raids target multiple Japanese air facilities as strikes continue in the Southwest Pacific.
Religious services drew larger crowds across Winchester with sun rise rites at Handley High School and the old Lutheran cemetery. Attendance rose as weather aided turnout and ministers noted renewed church interest amid civic tension.
In Chungking on April 10, U. S. 14th Air Force Mitchells damaged a 1,000-ton freighter off Yulikan on Hainan Island, left several smaller vessels burning, and destroyed two Japanese interceptors. Liberators bombed Hanoi rail yards and rail yards at Weichowtao in Tonking Gulf. Japanese installations at Wanglig on the Yunnan Burma border were bombed and strafed. A prior South Sea Liberator sweep reportedly sank a 1,000-ton freighter and two large vessels near southern Hainan Island.
London reports Tito’s Partisans halted renewed German pushes toward Mrkonjgrad in western Bosnia. The communique noted counterattacks against Banjatuka and localized fighting elsewhere, with casualties inflicted on Nazi and satellite troops.
In Colombo on April 10 a British communique said two large enemy supply ships were scuttled by their crews after attack by British warships and aircraft in the Indian Ocean. Survivors were saved from one vessel. submarine presence hindered rescuers for the second. The ships were described as blockade runners carrying valuable cargo.

Richmond April 10 Colonel Millis F Neal state director of selective service said several industries in the Norfolk Newport News area will release about 15000 men under 26 for immediate induction. Induction of younger men will be on a state then national level. Boards report few deferments and tests of individual indispensibility are strict. Local draft boards Virginia hold up processing of men over 26 in essential jobs until under 26 supply is exhausted.
Winchester appeals for 100 additional blood donors for the April 13 to 15 clinic. Civilian volunteers, ages 18 to 59 in good health, can register in room 22 at Peoples Drug Store or by calling 6502. Red Cross staff report low turnout due to Easter shopping but hope for sufficient signups to fill appointments.
City schools collected 27 498 pounds of scrap last month. John Kerr School had the highest average and won the Scrap Flag for the second time this year. Handley Grades Two and Virginia Avenue followed with large totals and averages. The flag will be presented at a school assembly this week with next collection dates set for April 27 and 28.
April 10 Baltimore report on Deborrah Sampson Gannett honored with a Liberty ship named for her. Publisher Frank Gannett and daughter Sally praised the Revolutionary War heroine as a pioneer who helped break gender barriers. He cited women in Britain's anti aircraft batteries and wartime factories as essential contributors. The Deborah Gannett ship will be the 320th Liberty vessel built at Bethlehem Fairfield Shipyard, honoring a young Massachusetts woman who fought three years under the alias Robert Shurtleff.

American bombers dropped 152 tons on Hollandia in one Saturday raid, part of 872 tons in a week on that New Guinea base. No Japanese planes appeared. Other weekend targets included Wewak 95 tons Hansa Bay 34 tons Rabaul 75 tons Kavieng 30 tons. One American plane was lost to anti aircraft fire.
William S. Huyett and Zeilor W. Bageant announced that the Frederick County Democratic Executive Committee will hold a mass meeting at the Winchester Court House at 2 30 PM on Saturday April 22 to select delegates to the state convention in Roanoke on July 8. The April 22 mass meeting was decided at the executive committee meeting held Saturday night.
