In fierce Okinawa combat American tank infantry attack Japanese cave networks and pillboxes on Red Hill with heavy artillery support. Japanese forces pour from caves as 184th Regiment withdraws from the hill. broader battle sees massive Pacific air and naval operations and heavy losses on both sides.
Vienna street fighting raged within a mile of the city core as Soviet forces closed most escape gaps northward. Berlin reported Russians seized key stations, crossed the Danube east of Vienna, and pressed toward As per n airport while maneuvering to cut rail lines toward Prague and Bruenn.
An air offensive by over 900 RAF heavy bombers hit the Blohm Voss submarine yard at Hamburg and the Lutzekendorf oil plant near Leipzig, with U S Eighth Air Force striking Berlin corridor targets. German losses included 192 planes in 24 hours.
CHUNGKING April 9. Two Japanese columns retreated into Honan after setbacks near the Shensi border. Chinese communique said more than half of one column was wiped out near southwest Honan, with remnants pursued eastward. A second column from northwestern Honan toward Shensi was routed after six hours of fighting.
Letter from Col C M Willingham to Mrs Bessie M Carroll confirms Staff Sergeant Milton R Carroll was killed in action January 31 1945 during an assault on enemy positions in Germany. He was buried in Belgium with a Protestant chaplain, praised for old traditions and devotion, awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge, and honored as a loyal soldier and dear friend by Regimental Commander Willingham and the unit.

In Muellhausen Germany on April 9 a 50 year old German soldier flagged American vehicles seeking return to his hometown. Two Sixth Armored Division soldiers learned through an interpreter he had been captured and sent to Huntsville Texas prison camp and was trying to reach home before possible recapture and sending to America.
A morning blaze of unknown origin in Front Royal gutted a large two story frame building on Chestnut Street housing Cooper Tire Service and damaged nearby properties. The fire with three extra companies forced several families from their apartments and caused thousands in losses. Fire chief Prank A Stoutamyer said estimates were not yet available and most losses may be insured.
Harold Nathan announces an FBI Law Enforcement Conference for local officers at Winchester Armory on Wednesday April 11 at 2 30 oclock. The Richmond Field Division hosts eight conferences in April with talks on Five Outstanding Fugitives Report Writing Public Relations and a motion picture Baptism of Fire. All local law enforcement officers are invited.

At a Friday meeting Ralph G. Hengeveld announced a county wide drive with Kiwanis Lions Rotary and Junior Board of Trade to collect 50 000 pounds of cast off but serviceable clothing for war torn countries. Depots will be set up city wide with Ben Belchie coordinating house to house collections and W S Wheatly directing a special events program.
SAN FRANCISCO April 9 Tokyo radio announced Baron Kiichiro Hiranuma as president of the privy council and Shigenori Togo as foreign minister and minister of East Asia affairs. The moves bolster Admiral Kan t ar o Suzuki's government amid a momentous crisis and reflect a tougher wartime stance. Hiranuma previously led the post 1936 39 era and briefly in 1939, while Togo had served as foreign minister at Pearl Harbor and as ambassador to Germany and Russia. Suzuki vows to lead the nation and crush the enemy despite criticism from Japan's military cliques.
Mrs. W. H. Oakes of Middletown and formerly of Roanoke learns her brother Pvt. Willie M. McMinnis was killed in action in Germany on March 19 1945 with the Third Army after wounds on January 28 and return to duty March 9. He enlisted July 1944, overseas January 1945. He leaves wife Mildred J. and two daughters, three brothers and six sisters including Cpl N G McMinnis and Pharmacist Mate O R McMinnis serving abroad.

Orchards suffered sub freezing damage across Frederick County and surrounding areas. Growers report heavy apple losses especially in low ground with some Yorks Staymans and peaches down but heavy blooms and favorable spots show residual fruit. Full extent won t be known for weeks as analysis continues in Berkeley Jefferson and Hampshire Morgan counties.
Paris reports Gen Omar Bradley's 12th Army Group has captured more than a million Germans on the Western Front. Patton's Third Army leads with 418 501 prisoners, Hodges' First Army has 405 703, and Williams' Army 182 162, for a combined total of 1,006,366. No figure yet for Gerow's 15th Army within the Sixth Army Group.
