80 million Trees Grow in Virginia Greening Effort
The Virginia Department of Forestry and Waynesboro farm ship 16 million seedling trees this year to Western Virginia. High school students and seasonal workers harvest and sort seedlings, with 30 workers sorting per shift and 85 percent survival, to be sold at about two cents each. The operation, led by Wayne McBee, uses cooperative forestry with Westvaco and supports land reclamation on abandoned mines, foreseeing future high growth and disease resistance trees.
