Relief troops landed at Khe Sanh as defenders began moving out to join the offensive against North Vietnamese troops who had besieged the outpost for 76 days.
Washington reports preliminary peace talks with North Vietnam advancing very slowly while on track. Johnson officials say contact has been agreed and steps underway despite a diplomatic blunder. Military actions near Khe Sanh continue with relief and probing operations amid weather limits.
In Memphis a lone gunman killed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr as he returned to lead a march in support of striking Memphis garbage workers. The search widened for a suspect described as tall and clean cut, with officials promising a break soon. King’s death prompted planned nationwide action and reflected the broader fight for civil rights and economic equality.
Local growers say last night's 28 degree low was not enough to harm apples in their stage. Peach damage remains unassessed as fruit may show issues only after thaw. Early morning observations found no serious concern. forecast calls for clear, cold weather with frost risk again.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr will be buried after a funeral at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta with services at Spelman College and a memorial at Morehouse College. King grew up in Ebenezer with his father and will be laid to rest beside his grandparents at South View Cemetery. His widow said the rites reflect his church faith education and nonviolent protest.
Linda Longerbeam won Miss Raritan '68 in the Zone 1 contest receiving the crown from 1967 winner Sandy Holbrook. Runner up was Cindy Boyce of North Frederick Rd. Longerbeam will compete in the Miss Shenandoah Apple Blossom contest in May.
Washington AP reports the civil rights bill lacking sufficient support as backers fear a backlash from Negro violence after Kings assassination jeopardizes House approval. The measure with an open housing provision trails by about eight votes and may be defeated if 50 undecided House members vote against it amid post assassination unrest in several cities.
A memorial service for Dii Martin Luther King Jr. will be held tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Market Street Methodist Church. The Rev Edward J Taylor says groups from Winchester Frederick and Clarke Counties organized the observance in connection with President Johnson proclamation declaring April 7 a day of national mourning.
