In New Hope Georgia a Southern Airways DC-9 crashed after a deadly storm. Pilot battled to reach a road as 85 aboard perished in the wreck near an elementary school. Authorities report 59 deaths among passengers and 8 on the ground with 26 survivors.
President Carter asks Congress to keep benefits for most recipients at current levels while eliminating the payment by beneficiaries. The plan would cut about 600,000 families from eligibility, reduce aid for 1.58 million families, keep or slightly raise aid for 3.26 million, and add 880,000 new households. It aims to save billions by removing a vendor rule and reducing fraud.
Authorities from Middletown police and Frederick County sheriff’s department investigate a shooting that damaged at least four cars in Middletown. A Lord Fairfax Community College vehicle and the police chief’s car were targeted with multiple bullet holes. two more cars near the Wayside Inn were damaged. No injuries reported.
At least one person is dead with reports of missing in southwest Virginia as floods force more than 1,000 families to flee. Gov. Godwin declared a state of emergency as National Guard and police race to reach flooded areas in Dickenson Grundy and Clintwood. Bridges and roads are out, and phone service is cut in St. Charles and Grundy.
Crown American official confirms K Mart plans to open a Winchester store in the Town and Country building after the May 15 lease expiration. The project includes revitalization of the site and potential future development behind Rt. 50. Nor thern Shenandoah Valley location would follow Front Royal move.
