An advance guard of about 150 Irish U.N. troops landed at Elisabethville airport and occupied the airfield without resistance. An additional 500 were expected soon as Tshombe and Katanga officials reacted to the UN maneuver amid rising tensions in the Congo crisis.
At the United Nations Cuba showed reluctance to press its long standing charge that the United States plans aggression against Fidel Castro's regime. The issue was not raised as the assembly’s political committee waited during the aid to Africa debate and Soviet hints cooled Cuban enthusiasm.
