Fire Devastates Historic New Golden Hotel. 11 Feared Dead
A blaze at the New Golden Hotel on Center Street near Virginia feet destroyed the four story building. An unidentified middle aged woman died and seventeen were injured while twenty one may still be missing. Firefighters battled the flames as walls collapsed and gambling halls nearby were damaged. A Forest Service plane dropped fire retardant after five hours as guests fled and the scene drew a crowded, panicked street.
