Claude B Smalts Jr veteran of eight years on the Common Council won the Democratic nomination for mayor of Winchester in the June 12 elections. He led with 1 360 votes from 2 218 voters. William M Battaile had 593 and H W Butler Jr 256. In ward two council race Orville Wine Charles Zuckerman and William E Argenbright won. Oliver G Cramer and Edward Gale were defeated.

Blood drive nets 131 pints at Red Cross clinic
The Winchester Red Cross Blood Donor Clinic, sponsored by the Winchester Lions Club, collected 131 pints toward a 144 pint quota. Mayor candidates Charles Zuckerman Claude Smalts Jr and others donated with Zuckerman reaching four gallons and Smalts one, while 32 first time donors brought the total to 2,502. E. T. Snider of the Division of Motor Vehicles asks car owners to purchase 1956 license plates soon with 11 days remaining before the April 15 deadline. About 6,000 to 7,000 plates are left. The new office at 701 S. Braddock St. offers licenses for trucks and cars 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily including Saturday through April 14. The Clearbrook Fire Department will hold its annual meeting April 9 at 8 p.m. at the Fire Hall with business, elections, and refreshments.

Woman Sets Fires in White House Offices
A middle aged woman said she wanted to burn trash and started small fires in the White House and four executive offices across the street. She was captured by a woman detective as she lit a fifth blaze. No major damage occurred. she was taken to a hospital for observation. The suspect, Mrs. Julia M. Chase, 53, was described as not lucid and disheveled.

Multiple crashes in fog injure several near Winchester
Several people were hurt in crashes across western Maryland and West Virginia due to dense fog. Three were hospitalized after a three day crash on US Route 522 north of Winchester with $2950 in damage. In Berkeley Springs two cars collided, leaving two critically injured and two others less seriously hurt. A Falls Church couple and their three sons were admitted after another crash, while a Cumberland Maryland man suffered injuries in a Frederick County three car crash. Specific victims include Michael Bodner and Mary Bodner with head and chest injuries and Elaine Drent with facial lacerations.
