Secretary of State Dean Rusk prepares to map a reply to a Soviet note on Laos. Lord Home, the British foreign minister, arrives in Washington to begin preliminary talks with U S officials.
Jakarta AP dispatch says Red China warned it would turn Laos into another Korea if SEATO troops enter Laos. Chen Yi cited potential Chinese action and supported a 14 nation conference on Laos political future while urging a peaceful settlement and UN involvement. Fighting in Laos eased Sunday with dueling statements from Washington and Hanoi on cease fire expectations.
U S naval authorities report the cable ship Western Union was stopped in international waters about five miles off Baracoa in Cuba. Cuban gunboats intercepted the vessel, then released it after U S jet planes and the destroyer John W Weeks arrived. the Weeks did not enter Cuban waters nor did planes fly over them.
Henry Lowry, manager, hopes to retrieve 100 dozen colored Easter eggs hidden by Commerce yesterday morning. A thin cover of snow fell early but melted quickly, and the egg hunt went ahead on schedule despite the wintry weather.
Easter Sunday activities included a sunny but chilly day with 500 attendees at the JCC egg hunt in Setseng Park. Johnny Haymaker won a camera set for the first egg, Robert Bennett 42 eggs earned him a $5 prize, and Mitzie Smith and Mike Tavenner received merchandise certificates.
Robert E. McCann American citizen jailed by the Chinese in 1951 for espionage is released after 15 years. Other Americans jailed include John T. Downey Richard Fecteau and Hugh Haben Yonkers. Peiping cited humanitarian reasons for McCann’s pardon and his wife’s request.
An Eastern Air Lines Electra landed safely at Logan International Airport after a damaged nose wheel tire. Passengers reported tense moments as the aircraft circled to burn fuel before a controlled touchdown, prompting emergency measures and a chorus of relief.
A Trailways bus with 17 aboard overturned on US 211 near Warrenton Virginia. The southbound vehicle from Washington to Charlottesville turned on its side and rested in a wooded area. Passengers were taken to a hospital. no injuries details available.
The United Nations extends Dag Hammarskjold's spending authority to 8 million dollars through April 21 as the Congo force budget is reviewed. Soviet bloc and Mali oppose the stopgap resolution with 51 votes in favor, 10 against, 22 abstentions.
The Associated Press reports 14 people died on Virginia roads over Easter weekend, pushing the 1961 toll to 169. Fatalities included 10-year-old Dennis Hagee near Salem and 10-year-old Delmer Jones visiting Ivanhoe, plus multiple other crashes across Russell, Charlotte, Isle of Wight, Caroline, Pulaski, Nansemond, and nearby counties.
In Leopoldville a Lumumbist mediator arranged a peace flight to Stanleyville to woo Antoine Gizenga of the Stanleyville regime. Cleophas Kamitatu would seek Gizenga’s support for a federation of Congolese states while insisting he acts as a neutral emissary. Gizenga, rival premier aligned with Lumumba’s associates, has previously rejected federation bids.
President Kennedy will fly to Paris from Palm Beach May 31 for a three day summit with Charles de Gaulle. He will precede the trip with a visit to Ottawa to address parliament and a Canadian stop. He plans to return by early June with no announced plans for other European capitals.
Parts of Virginia experience pre dawn temperatures dipping below freezing with Newport News reaching 28 degrees the lowest hourly reading. Weather officials warn of rain mixing with snow in the southwest as a low pressure system develops in the Ohio Valley and spreads southward over the day.
