Washington AP Gen Douglas MacArthur shows further heart and kidney decline at Walter Reed Army Hospital prompting a semi artificial dialysis procedure. Doctors report continued deterioration after prior low blood pressure and bleeding, with esophageal balloon treatment aiding stabilization.
Winchester Republicans gather at Town House Restaurant to nominate candidates for mayor and six council seats in the November 9 election. The event includes delegates to the Valley District GOP Convention in Waynesboro and the Virginia State GOP Convention in Richmond. Officials name two chairs and appoint city committee members for the next two years.
Senator Thomas J. Dodd urged open and increasing aid to Cuban freedom fighters in a Senate speech. He predicted a future Cuban popular revolt against Communist rule and warned that timely U.S. action could determine victory or defeat when the uprising erupts.

Allen Shulman of Shawnee Enterprises announces the purchase of the Perry Engineering Co. property on Rt 50 East for a new Holiday Inn. Construction is to start within a month with opening planned for February or March next year. The project will include 74 to 80 motel units a swimming pool and banquet facilities for 250 to 275. James G and Manuel G Sempeles of Winchester will operate the Open Hearth Restaurant at the new site and will continue to operate the existing Open Hearth on Rt 11.
